im going to look at a older browning toped with a leopold. he only want 650 fo rthe gun/scope or 550 for the gun. does this seem reasonable? (of coarse i havent seen it yet but it sound like a dec. price. its a 30-06 bolt. he could only get 2" groups at 100 but he was using factory ammo. and only a box and a half scince he got it. it was used when he got it. he doesnt know how old it is.

sooo what do u think of this gun?

For deer to 300 yards,it won't matter at all. Both cartridges are actually more powerful than is required.I prefer the 7mmremmag myself for big game at longer ranges, but for your uses, you can't make a wrong choice.

If you're concentrating on deer, why not consider a .270? Plenty of gun for deer and then some. With the right loads, you can take moose, elk, black bear, almost anything you want in Canada.

Between the 2 you mentioned though, I would pick the .30-06 and use maybe 150-165 gr bullets. Almost any kind.

A lot of it comes down to personal preference.

Both are more than adequate for the intended purpose. Do you reload/intend to reload? Are both rounds available in quantity, priced similarly at your local store? I'd personally go for the odd six as I already have three others and the ammo and the reloading equipment. If your starting from scratch, it's a different story. In this case, no matter which one you go with you won't make a bad decision.:sniper:

How much recoil can you take?
If it were me, I would take Jacks fav., the 270win. I had one, stupid me traded it off. If you go with the 270, I still have some brass, bullets, and maybe dies if you need, just pm me.

my dad has a 270 win but i dont like to shoot it. it doesnt fit me. i held the gun and it felt really nice. i plan on shooting factory loads for the first season then reload after i got lots of brass. i prob. be shooting 150's to 165's

I have an '06 Savage (different model 116FCSS). I did some research and found the ammo in my area to be cheaper for the '06 and I didn't really have any plans of and crazy long shots while hunting...my range is in the 100-300 yards. The '06 is plenty of gun for it and the ammo options are huge. Just my $.02...although there are a LOT of guys on here with way more knowledge than me when it comes to guns.

One more thing to consider is the '06 has been around for a long long time and has been used to game all kinds of game all over N. America.
