Oil dents on shoulder of case

I have a .22 Hornet and Hornady dies. I resized all my new brass no problem but the second time I resized some of it I noticed that I have some shallow, vertical oil dents on the shoulder. They're all like that but I don't think they'd be much of a problem because they're quite shallow. I don't have that much lube on and I'd hate to risk cutting it back too much and ending up with a stuck case. The resizing die does seem surprisingly tight compared to the other types of cartridges I load. Any comments? :)

22 hornet is damn hard to lube without getting it on the shoulder. I have dents in mine as well. For gopher whacking, I don't think the gopher will know if the case had a dent in it or not :D

Try using RCBS lube or Redding lube and put it on with your fingers from the shoulder down.

Imperial sizing die wax.

Conventional Hornet case is very susceptible to this. Biggest advantage of the K-Hornet is its sharp shoulder. Velocity isn't really much higher, but cases are a far "better" shape. I have no Hornets, I bought a reamer and now own 4 Ks!

I find that 223 Rem cases are also susceptible to dents. To avoid this I first lube the interior of the neck using a cotton bud, then lay the cases in a line on newspaper. I use another sheet to cover the neck and shoulder area before lightly spray lubing the bottom half of the case. This seems to avoid the shoulder dents.

Depending on how many rounds you resized you may need to clean the die. I found I was getting oil dents when the vent hole on the die got plugged. I would recommend you take the die apart and wash it with really hot water use a paper clip and clean the vent hole after dry the die thoroughly and then give the outside of the die a quick wipe with oil - the inside will be good when you start re-sizing again.

I tried for the first time RCBS pad and oil. Dented 13 out of 30 cases on the shoulder. WHAT AM I NEW? I have used Lee lude since I started and never had a problem. Ya I know I used to much lube. I switched back to Lee lube and everything is good again.

The cases I dented were the guy that sold me his RCBS setup at about $40.00 /50. I agreed to load .338 mag for him.

Its all about learning right?

thanks

First thing you should do it throw out yoru spray lube, then throw out your liquid lube. Then buy some Hornady tub lube (not the proper name). Lightly lube the body of the case and scrape a bit opff your fingers into the mouth of the case. You'll never have another problem with dents.

Liquid lube and spray lube are both ####e. Take the extra time and lube your cases by hand for much better reults.
