I may have an opportunity to throw a few hand grenades at a military range. I have read that hand grenade training is one of the most dangerous small arms training scenarios in case of a stress induced brain fart.

Any advice from members with hand grenade experience would be appreciated. Would my level IIA soft body armour be a good idea?

follow direction as taught.

if you dont understand ASK questions.

if possible have the instructors do a dry run /practise with dummy grenade before using real grenade .
if nervous be honest , dont try to be a john wayne or rambo.

ok?

Don't drop it after you have pulled the pin... I wouldn't bother with the armour, it might increase the risk of a screw up on your part anyway and will not do you much good if you do drop it. Listen very carefully to your instructors.... don't panic is also good advice ;)

A frag at your feet would kill you regardless of the type of vest. Take your time (while the spoon is still attached!!!) and ask a lot of questions.

Hmm, always keep your eyes on the grenades. Meaning ALWAYS keeping your eyes ON the grenades! Even when you will pull your arm back to give yourself a better swing..

Got it?

Good..Take good breaths, don't be nervous...AND DON'T SHAKE OR #### UP  !!!

Just kidding :D..

Now i'm serious : Look, "playing" with grenades is no big deal as long you're cautious, keep your eyes on the grenade at all times and have a good grip on the damn thing :)..

Only thing to remember at all cost? When you pull the pin, mister grenade is no longer your friend :D !

Don't be surprised if the "staff" look a bit nervous, they might have seen peoples literally "freeze" (before of after they pulled the "pin") or just seen some just dropping the grenade at their feet.

In theses case, they don't ask themselves "did he pulled the pin?", they just assume that yes so they drag people out FAST..If it mean kicking some ass, THEY DO IT..

Don't be nervous, just take good breaths if you are and everything will be okay..Don't be afraid to ask your superior, they know what it is since they were in your shoes at some time :).

Disclaimer - This is not a definitive guide to the use of and handling of grenades and other devices.

Inspect the grenade for damage.
Remove (assuming M-67) the Safety Clip.
Straighten the safety pin.
Grip grenade in your THROWING hand with the Safety Lever in your palm.
With the grenade held close to your body, pull the ring attached to the safety pin away from the grenade. Do NOT pull the grenade away from the pin.
When it is safe to do so (whether deemed so by you and/or instructor) throw the grenade at your target. Watch where it lands.
Duck.
Kaboom. (note - not all grenades go boom. If grenade does not go boom let someone who has more luck deal with the problem.)
Smile :)

Just remember, you'll have a better chance of getting hurt or killed during your drive to the range, than during your grenade pratice. You WILL GET A RUSH doing this, so try to breathe normal, relax and enjoy the moment. The other guys have given you enough saftey talks, and don't be disapointed when the grenade goes off, and half the world "does not" go up in smoke, like in the movies. They make a "krump" sound, and on a sandy range there is a small flash, and a bit of smoke...

You're going to be walked, and closely supervised, through the whole process. Forget what your seeing here, just listen to the bay NCO and follow their instruction when you get there. You'll likely find the whole thing rather anti climactic once your completed, but have fun anyway. Not everyone, in Canada at least, gets to throw a grenade.

Grenades were the only thing in the forces that gave me that bad feeling that I was moments away from a bad thing happening. Glad when I did it and it was over with.

How about checking the container/canister it comes in for damage or tampering.

Remove the red safety seal.

counting to seven(another good one)

not looking directly through the "little" window.

The guys in the tower will keep an eye out for where it
lands.

Keeping the ring and pin to show your civi friends.
from what I can remember.

Where abouts are you doing this?

the grenade was the absolute last weapon of choice in the field due to the collateral damage when used- bloop tube, suppresive fire, whatever but grenade, then only if you didn't have claymores and had the time to rig a wire and tie the works to a tree or something- it should also be pointed out that you make an excellent target when you go vertical to throw the darned thing
