Confused about 3-gun competitions

Hey guys.

I just got myself a new (to me) AR-15, and I've been looking up info on different shooting sports I can do with it. I shoot IPSC with my Beretta, and have been curious about 3-gun and Service Rifle competitions. I was looking through the forums, and it appears that, to the best of my knowledge, 3-gun competitions here consist of Pistol, Rifle, and Precision rifle parts. Yet when I Youtubed 3-gun, it shows competitions with pistol, rifle, and shotgun.

I guess my questions are:
  • Are both types of 3-gun offered here in Canada/Ontario?
  • Am I watching videos of American 3-gun competitions for the ones with shotguns?
  • What gauge are the shotguns in said video? I have a 9mm pistol, a new AR15, and a 20GA shotgun, but nothing in the way of precision rifle. I'd love to get into this 3-gun stuff, but if I need a precision rifle, I'll have to wait until I make a real paycheck.

For sure, 3 gun with pistol, rifle and Shotgun are offered around the country. I've not heard of precision rifle being the third, but maybe somewhere? Shotgun is definitely the most popular for #3.
Shotgun is usually 12 GA, but you should probably be able to use a 20. Depends on the match organizer. The big factor is that what you shoot out of it knocks down the steel targets primarily used in the competitions.

Yes. ISPC has Multigun, IDPA/ODPL has MultiGun, Service rifle has Multigun
The differences are as follows and please anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

IPSC Multigun: Handgun, Shotgun, Carbine/Rifle. A stage only uses ONE type of firearm (Aka Shotgun only during a stage). Shooting most likely is not from a static position (AKA all shooting from a fixed position)

IDPA/ODPL Multigun: Handgun, Shotgun, Carbine/Rifle, Precision Rifle (Optional additions that I have ever seen). A stage can combine the use of any of the types of Firearms. Usually two but can be more. Shooting most likely is not from a static position

Service Rifle Multigun: Handgun, Service Rifle, Precision Rifle. Stage only uses ONE type of firearm. Shooting is from a static position.

Not necessarily. Though I bet a far greater percentage are from the USA.

Most Shotguns are 12ga due to the availability and price of ammunition but nothing should prevent you from using a 20ga. Shot sizes are what is regulated as far as I know. As for the precision rifles, at longer range (in excess of 200m) matches then yes, most likely have to wait, but some (Mysticplayer comes to mind) have done Precision rifles on a basically shoestring budget.

Spazmo - Have a look at the OSA 3-Gun matches being held this weekend, I have a description in the Events section. Don't know if you have a precision rifle, but your AR and Beretta would be fine for 2 of the 3 shoots.

Ok allow me to correct.

IPSC 3 gun matches have as much or in fact MORE running and gunning than standard IPSC matches. Well at least the ones I have been to in Barrie and those I host at EESA.
 
Spazmo...no need to over think this ;)

Also no need to assume that a suitably scoped AR15 would not be good out to 300 meters (for an IPSC target). That being said...shots at that distance are rare in IPSC 3 gun...so you need a rifle that is suitable for all the shots - long and short (and your AR15 is an excellent choice)

You didn't mention what you have for a shotgun...but basic pumps (870 or 590) are what you are most likely to see at an IPSC 3 gun. If you don't have one...you can probably arrange to borrow one at the match.

IPSC 3 gun is just getting a foot hold in Ontario...and the regular participants and the match organisers do go the extra mile in the spirirt of getting more people involved.

You have a Black Badge, and pistol and an AR15...any shotgun will do (or borrow one at the match) so...see you on the range :cool:

Right now in my hands I have the Beretta and a Rem 870 in 20GA. The AR-15 I recently (RE: last week) purchased from a member from PEI. Now I just have to wait for him to get the ATT to ship it to me. Won't be able to shoot the AR part of the match until she comes in. As for precision rifle, a Cooey .22 wouldn't fall into the "adequate" category. I don't know if iron sights and a Mk. 1 eyeball count as "suitably scoped" either. Once the AR gets in though, then I'll be good to go for 3-gun. I know for IPSC I can use the Ontario online registration to see when the 3-gun matches are (one's listed in Barrie at the beginning of Oct). Is it the same for IDPA?

The IPSC.Matches.net system was developed by one of our members (CGN member Omen)

It's used for IPSC Matches (pistol or 3 gun)

I have no idea if xDPA has a similiar system...but there are several active xDPA shooters on the forum that probably let you know...

The best three-gun fun is to be had in the US.
'Clubs there have the real estate to host great matches and are unencumbered by many of the ridiculous range rules we have in Ont.
Two clubs I shoot at in MI are BWSA just over the Bridge from Sarnia

A bit of a drive, but well worth it... The last match I shot at Livingston back in August was two days... One day 8 stages of shotgun and the next day 8 stages of three gun. :)
