I have an old 1" tubed scope. Can I lather Jeweler's Rouge on the old scope and slide it back and forth through my rings, with ever increasing ring screw tightness? How else would I do it?? I would like to lap the rings on a few rifles.

Lapping tool is just a rod of the proper diameter, with grooves cut in it to hold the compound, and a handle mounted at 90 degrees. Rouge might not cut enough, you might want something a bit more aggressive. Would be easy enough to make up a tool, and it would likely work better than a discarded scope.

buy a scope lapping kit from a dealer (there should be someone in K-town with all the long range guys around)
your old scope may not be straight or stiff enough to maintain a true lap
plus jewelers rouge may not have enough grit to lap properly either

You don't lap with both halves of the rings assembled.

The most common ring to lap is the Leupold turn in style. You would align the bottom halves and start to lap and stop and inspect to see if they are close to alignment and then proceed. I use 120 grit abrasive. It must be all well cleaned up after. Weaver style rings do not benefit from lapping. They usually mark or damage the scope tube anyway.

Lapping rings is not a big job and when done properly your scope will not get marked up from installing and removing. I always put powdered rosin inside the rings after lapping and before installing the scope.

Most gunsmiths have a very reasonable rate for doing this.

If you want to do it yourself, I believe Sinclair has the kits for around 38$ ...

Sinclair has a lot of nice products.

You need a Brownells catalog.

Thanks guys.
I do have almost exclusively Leupold turn in rings, save for the two Rugers.
Denis, do the Ruger rings benefit from lapping?

Ruger rings are a version of round but not one that I like. They take a long long long long time to lap. There is a double ended 1" and 30mm spiral cutter with a handle in the centre that works very nice!
