Ruger RSI....how are they

Just made a deal on a RugerMKII with full wood in 270....anybody have any experience with these particular critters...any tips or tricks or anything to be aware of due to being a full lenght stock?...thanks in advance
 
Had one in .270 that really liked 150 grain Nosler Partitions. The only down-side was that the recoil was a bit stiff (but bearable) with the 150's.

Given that it's a full-length stock, the most practical approach to increasing its accuracy is to simply experiment with some different loads to see what it likes best.
 
I find them too heavy and clumsy. Mind you I have no experience with the short action so they may be better, but I doubt it. The wood seemed too thick too. Just my opinion of course. I am sure some people wouldn't like some rifles that I adore!

Don't get the wood wet Bob! POI will change as it dries. Had this happen one fall hunting in the rain with another RSI (308 Tang Safe). Might not be a bad idea to seal the stock inside the barrel channel and around the action when it hits the "Wet Coast". Enjoy it, I never shot it, so I can't comment on recoil. I have a Heym in 30-06 and it seems to be a little "stiff"!
 
OK thanks fellas....I'll definately seal it up in the barrel channel Chris..hardly rains where I am at,so that won't be too much of a problem...
 
I had a .308win with the tang safety. It worked well - killed a couple of deer, but I wanted the stainless/synthetic for the wet coast.

Give us a range report when you take it out and let us know what you think.

Had one in 270 and loved it, the short action made it easy to carry and it shot 1" groups at 100 yards with Federal Premium.

I also took th efore stock off and coated the barrel channel with Bee's wax as I do with all my hunting rifles, helps keep them dry.

First "brand name" gun I bought in 1985 was an RSI in 270. Didnt mind the recoil but the muzzle blast was a bit much..had it rebbld as a 6mm with a conventional forend.. still have it and still use it.

I assume you meant the short "barrel", not "action". The 270 uses the standard long action.

I rather like these actually, the stock (like most Ruger stocks) is a bit "clubby", but once slimmed down they are a nice, well balanced hunting rifle that isn't run of the mill. - dan

I used an early one (tang safety) in B.C. for years. It was in .308. It took a bit of work to find out what it liked, but 165 grain bullets were very accurate and very deadly on Elk, Moose, and Deer.

They are a joy to carry in the "black timber" of the mountains, and point well.
