I suddenly had this idea, and I had this extra BDM that came with my TacSol .22 upper (I prefer the black ones). I got the idea from .22 pistols mags I have, where the have a little nub you can grab that pulls the follower down to make it easier to load. I came up with a way to make it work on a BDM mag after taking one apart. I used my dremel in a very "Macgyver" setup to quickly cut the slot in the mags. I then drilled the end of the follower and fitted a 1/16" steel rod. Something thicker to grab would be nice, but I just quickly threw this together. It makes it VERY easy to load one of these, and if you have the opaque black mags, which I like, you can now see your round count. I didn't have anymore .22 on me so I used 12 .22 dummy rounds for the pics and function test. The bolt hold open follower still does it's job in my .22 TacSol upper with this mod.

Just finished building a testing a jig to do the rest. It has adjustment screws, which also lock the piece inplace, so I can do both halves. I'll need to order some of the new bolt hold open followers, and experiment with different pins.

Can drill a "hole" in the grove at the bottom so can push head of pin into hole and lock follower in place.

One day will build a nice bench like that with clamps and extraction (of course that one day may be in one or two decades).

Did my other mags tonight. Currently they only show the round count. I'm not 100% sure what I will do for the hold down pins yet.

This one has the original's follower installed.

Good stuff.
Now we need an adapter for the Ruger 10/22 high capacity magazine loaders. I've got the shooter's ridge one ;). Then we'll be in business.

The holidays have given me time to work on this again. I started by making the jig to drill a hole into the new bolt-hold-open followers I ordered from BDM a few months back. It simply holds the bottom of the follower in place while I drill a 3/32" hole. I then tapped the hole with a 4-40 tap (3/32" is not the correct hole size, #43 drill is but I didn't have one on hand and this worked).

I used a stainless 7/8" (I think) bolt and a nut which is red loctited in place. Hopefully the red loctite holds the nut enough and wont come loose under use. They seem to run smooth enough, though I only have 12 dummy rounds to cycle through my AR. The bolts are in the shallow "valley" areas of the BDM mag body so they do not contact the magwell when the round count is low. I have also thought about putting highlights on the mag body at 5 - 10 - 15 - 20 - 25 rounds.

Excellent mod!

If there is a way to fit them in a nice touch might be to use a ball type end on a piece of 4-40 threaded rod. Something like this might work with a a few mods:

Shaving off the hex's at the bottom should allow them to work on both sides with very little change to what you have now and will look very factory.
Any good local hobby store can order those parts for you if interested.

Do they make a 10 round mag? I ask because the 27 rounders are too tall for decent bench rest shooting.

A 15 rounder is the closest. I have seen guys cut down their 27 rounders to 10 for bench shooting.
