Thinking about a rifle in.270. (Thinking about a lot of rifles actually:redface:) What are the thoughts on the caliber for hunting bush/cuts? Who's got experience with them hunting in the bush?

Cheers, Stef

you cant beat a pump for a hunting rifle. very slick action so you can get lots of shots off, especially at running game so often encountered in 'the bush'

I use a Remington 760 in .270 in fairly heavy bush. I'm very happy with it's performance but then again I don't shoot through bushes or anything. If you think it's going to be that thick I'd use a 12 ga with slugs.

If you used the smilies, it'd be easier to tell if your being sarcastic...;):)

Hi Stefan,

I use a 7600 in .308 , open sights, for hunting Domtar land. They cut strips of woods in some areas and it's not uncommon to stumble onto deer that are laying in the sun. Most other times in "the bush", when you see them, they are generally on top of you, so a nice fast pointing gun is the best for these types of woods, not one of those bolt action scoped rifles... :stirthepot2:

In short, I dont think you can find a better gun for that kind of bush.

If you're planning on sitting in a treestand over a pile of apples, that's another story.

Cheers,

I have the model 76 (plain version with no engraving or checkering) in .30-06 and I must say I love it. I have lots of other open area guns but when woods hunting is on the menu, this little guy can get off 5 shots quicker than my buddies 2 shots with a bolt. Slick action and reliable. Accurate to boot too!!

You mean clear cut ! I know thier work .

wow I dont know where you get your info but the club I'm at rents 6000 acres of domtar land and in the 11 years I've been there I've never seen a clear cut. They'd be pretty stupid to do that anyways, everybody knows forests grow faster when you leave some standing...

Anyways, sorry for the off topic..

The 7600 os one of the most accurate out of the box rifles made. 270 is an excellent caliber for deer and moose.

Logging cuts can present an opportunity for a long shot, so the 270 is better than the 35 Whelen, for example, another caliber offered in the 7600.

Is the 280 offered? Given the choice between 270 and 280, I would take the 280 because of the bigger choice of 7mm bullets. I hunt with both and doubt any animal could ever tell the difference.

Our moose hunt started this morning at 6:47AM. My hunt ended this morning at 6:59AM. Details to follow when I get my camera back from the hunting pard's place.

I took the 375/338.

.

You waited 20 years to hunt for 12 minutes. You are one dedicated SOB!:D:dancingbanana:

Shoulda used the 760, a true classic.
