Hi Folks great site here. Lots one can think about.

So here is my dilemma, I have been shooting my TikkaTactical308 for 3 years now and love its accuracy but I made the mistake of talking to a friend in Alberta and he convinced me ( without any effort) to buy a new gun, funny thing is I spent the last 30 years shooting my Bows at various competitions as well as hunting because I found I was shooting at things well under the 100 yard range. Story short...sold all my guns back then and now I have been bitten by the long range bug!!!!!!
So I picked up a Remington VLS in 243 put a IOR 2x12 on it and am having a blast shooting out to 300 yards with .5 groups just like my Tikka 308 but unfortunately I like the 243 better than the 308. So I was thinking if I burn out the barrel at some point would I go to a different calibre like 6.5x47 or 6BR to have as much fun. I will be using it for Coyotes when I travel back to Alberta and possibly here in B.C for Deer etc if I find it is not to heavy to cart around and if so I also have a Sako 3006 Finnlite with a Leopold 4x14 VXL on it for back up hunting.
Thanks for any response.

If you can readily get your hands on those calibers, then there's no reason not to. I'm thinking they'd be lethal enough for varminting, but not much bigger targets than that (or so I've read). Great for target practice though.

Well, seeing how a 6.5x47L is a meager 100 fps. (at best) slower than a .260 Remington with equivalent bullet weights, I'd say you're incorrect. Critter you shoot isn't going to know the difference. a 120gr. bullet at 3,000 fps. is going sting more than just a little.

6BR is not much different. While not 100% ideal, it would be only slightly behind .243 Win. in terms of velocity potential. You'll see a great deal better barrel life and almost definitely an increase in accuracy with a 6BR than a .243 Win. That much is relatively certain.

I'm thinking either of these cartridges would be adequate for short to medium ranges for deer sized game.

tikkatactical308. I'm a little unclear as to what you are saying about wearing out a barrel. Are you referring to the Tika or the Remington? I'm assuming you mean the Remington because that .308 will likely last long enough that you'll grow bored of the rifle before you shoot out the barrel. The .243 will lst you at best 2,500 rounds or possibly much less depending on how hot you're loading.

The BR

I'm shooting a 6BR now for long range shoots. I'm using 105/107 gr bullets with damn nice accuracy out to 1000yds it's travelling around 2950fps.
The only problem is you,ll have to reload unless your rich. I used store bought ammo to break in the barrell . Diamond line ammo is $200/box for 50 rds.

Love the caliber

The Remington of course....I'm not sure I will ever shoot out the barrel on the Tikka due to the fact I waven't shot it since I bought the 243. As far as the 6.5x47 or 6BR I was just thinking of these because of all the hype on the net ,I think with enough practice one could shoot quite well with the 243 and have as much fun at long range but your right in the fact that I will indeed burn out the barrel sooner or later. So If it came down to a new barrel I was just wondering if I shoud go to a new caliber and spend the money on new dies..brass..etc.or stick with a 243. I will be getting the action blueprinted at some point and my thoughts were on a Night Force to top it off.

Thanks for the input.

re...

Ice-pick
The friend I was talking about took his 243 and turned it into a 6Br,he said it was a great caliber and shot so much he burnt the barrel out, now he has rebarreld it into a 6.5x47 so you can see what kind of preasure I'm getting. I would like to go for the 6.5x47 myself but can't seem to justify it, I'm not sure if it will out shoot the 243 in a long range match between paper and small game. I think the person behind the gun is the one makeing the shot and if you have two guns that can shoot .5 moa or better whos to know what caliber is better. But I could be wrong.HAHAHAAHa
