Monster moose taken in NB!

Well ....... as most of you know I FINALLY got drawn for a moose tag here in NB after waiting for 20yrs. Our moose season started yesterday morning at 6:47AM and runs for three days only. We are allowed to buy a second gun licence, but are only allowed to take one moose. The price of the two licences was $125. :eek:

Here are a couple pics of the "lookout" we hunted from. It sits about 30ft high over an old cutover with a ATV/woods road running through it which was about 100yds from our spot.

I started calling about 20min before the season opened and notice this MONSTER coming up the road to my call. He finally got in front of me at 6:59AM. 12minutes into the season and it was over. :(

You should have taken the picture earlier, just after you shot him, and not waited. The antlers are large through the scope but shrink a lot when the animal hits the ground.:)

Anyway, nice Moose. One like that should be excellent eating, and you can use a knife and fork, instead of a chain saw.

20 years is a long time to wait. Glad it finally happened.

Good for you man! It may not be the monster you hoped for, but it's better than waiting twenty years only to get skunked. That's a lot of good meat!

I'm going out this weekend to see if I can, against all odds, find a spikefork, and put one of those bad boyz in my freezer. I'm not allowed to shoot anything bigger here without a LEH draw. Maybe one day....
 
Congrads. I suspect that will provide some of the most flavourable tender cuts. Their all monsters over the frying pan, barbque or in the roasting pot! Just that some 1000 lbs'ers taste like shate. All fought out and tough as leather.

That little buddy took a 260gr 375cal Nosler AB in the lungs at 100yds and never twitched. Bullet stopped on the hide on the far side. :eek: Two follow up shots were implemented. He finally went down on the third.

I should have called in an airstrike instead. ;)

Holy Moly!!! That's what I shoot. :eek: That's one tuff SOB, it shoulda knocked him right over!

He was dead on his feet and just didn't know it yet.
 
Nicely done. I am really surpised that the bullet did not exit and that you had to shoot him again. I'm with the other guy, I thought it would have bowled him right over. Congrats on the moose after a 20 year wait. That is ridiculous that you have to wait that long.
 
Congratulations Paul! It must have felt really nice to finally get a chance at a moose. Is that a drop tine I see?

No offence taken! :)

We only get a three day season, so basically it's shoot the first one you see, cows included and sometimes calves on the last day. It ends up being more of a meat shoot than a hunt.

Our moose generally are alot bigger. This little fellow only weighed about 450-500lb on the hoof. I help one of the butchers here during moose season. Last year they cut over 55 moose and believe me, most WERE bigger than the one I shot. I would have rather something a bit bigger, but you takes whats ya get and it is quite warm so it's better to get it over with.
