The 686 is a great revolver--and you can find used ones (or its blued equivalent, the 586) on the EE for pretty good prices. You might also think about something like the classic Model 28 Highway Patrolman, which is built on the heavier "N" frame. Much as I like the N frames, the 686's slightly smaller "L" frame is plenty strong for a steady diet of magnum loads. If you want a slightly smaller frame you could think about the Model 66 in stainless or its blued equivalent the Model 19. They're built on the lighter "K" frame. They're good if you want to shoot mostly .38's and not a steady diet of magnums, especially the lighter weight ones.
