Monster moose taken in NB!

Geez, Paul. I sure thought those Accubond would hold up a little better when going through ribs and lungs. 53% and 66% retention is FAR less than I would have expected. Maybe I should rethink my .375 bullet selection. I guess dead is dead. That .375 CT velocity is up there right? 2600-2700 or so?
Gate,
How did the Accubond perform on your large black bear? It killed it, I know, you smarta$$. Pass through, weight retention?
Hmmmmmmm .

That Accubond sits a ways out in the neck. When I load for the .375 Ruger, the bullet is seated to the cannelure.... What is the OAL of the .375 CT, I see you use .338 Win Mag brass. I was unaware that it was a necked up .338.

You know that Gatehouse is going to gloat about the fact that you should have used a 375 Ruger.....
I am also suprised at the penetration with the AB. The 140gr AB that we used in your .270 penetrated the hell out of that blackie we shot with it. It also smashed over 8 vertebra on top of 20" of penetration on a 400lbs bear.
Did you buy ballistic tips and paint the tips white......:p
Good on ya though. It feels good to have all that meat in the freezer don't it.

I have not seen anything official about moose size, but having hunted in BC, northern Ontario and New Brunswick, I would say they are biggest in the West and smallest in the east.

I used to hunt NB every year and sometimes got one there and one in Ontario. FWIW I got the impression that the NB ones tasted better. They live in rather lush country.

Assuming I know it was a good shot that hit where I aimed (most of my shots have been at close range) I fire the shot and just wait to see what happens. Sometimes they flop dead (spine shot) but more often they walk/run about 50 yards before keeling over. I suppose I could fire another shot but my mind says to me "He is dead but does not know it." One of these days I am going to have a shot deflected to a clean miss and feel pretty stupid...

On NB moose (about 600 pounds on the hoof) the guy I was with saw it first and fired. Shot was about 100 yards. Absolutly nothing happened. He said "Shoot!" so I did. My 35 Whelen bullet hit high and cut the spine. It went straight down. We found that his 180 gr 303 Brit bullet had gone right through the heart. A classic "He was dead and did not know it."

Sad thing is that when the bull went down my buddy started to run towards it. He could not see that a second moose had stood up to see what was going on. I thought it was the same moose and wanted to shoot again, but couldn't.

I am not surprised your bullet lost some weight. It was shot at close range and hit with a lot of velocity and a bit of yaw. At 100 to 200 yards it would have had more of a classical mushroom. A lesser bullet could have blown up at that velocity/short range.

No offence taken! :)

We only get a three day season, so basically it's shoot the first one you see, cows included and sometimes calves on the last day. It ends up being more of a meat shoot than a hunt.

Our moose generally are alot bigger. This little fellow only weighed about 450-500lb on the hoof. I help one of the butchers here during moose season. Last year they cut over 55 moose and believe me, most WERE bigger than the one I shot. I would have rather something a bit bigger, but you takes whats ya get and it is quite warm so it's better to get it over with.

Congrats Paul, that's a good eating size critter,I believe that 400 lbs of prime steak is better than 1000 lbs of Goodyear rubber..........:D

Holy Moly!!! That's what I shoot. That's one tuff SOB, it shoulda knocked him right over!

I'd hedge a bet if it takes 20 years to get a moose tag I would shoot three times too. ;) In essence he got a tag every 6.67 years having hit this one three times. :D

Is that any comfort Paul?

Christy's cow she shot last year was only two and a half. Not a whole lot of meat but boy, I'm eating the tenderloin right now with gravy and horseradish, oh boy is it good!:)

Congratulations on a great moose. Better to take a small and tasty once every ten years than to risk getting skunked in exchange for tough and leathery.

I envy you. I haven't even had the chance to go hunting yet. (Ever) Goy my guns, got my license, got no time. Dang.

Congratulations on your spledid trophy!
Only problem is, with that abnormal point, it will have to be scored in the abnormal catagory, thus, it may not make the record book!

However, a trophy is an individual thing and varies greatly with the individual hunter. What you went through to get a chance at one, I would say you have a trophy.
I once shot a mountain goat in thick fog, thinking it was a darn good billy at about 150 yards. Turned out to be a young billy with 6 inch horns, at about 60 yards! However, the spledid hunt with an outstanding hunting partner, was such a great trip, that I wrote a story about it, entitled, "A Fine Trophy."
The story was the feature article in the magazine of the wildlife associations of the western provinces, "The Outdoor Edge." I think it was the Nov-Dec, 1999 issue.

Congratulations Paul; Even here in BC, That moose would be down, right now! Best eating on earth, those young bulls. For those who conjectured that the slug should have "knocked" the moose down, you haven't shot a lot of moose. Nothing fired from the shoulder "knocks" a moose down unless you hit the spine or it breaks both shoulders. Most moose shot through the ribs with anything decent just stand there for a few seconds while the fact that they are dead sinks into that ample skull of theirs. Then they go to take a step and just keel over. Regards, Eagleye.

The COL is 3.445" which puts the bullets about 20 thou off the lands. Its a pretty long bullet at 1.383", so there still lots left in the neck w/o going past the shoulder too much.

That's what the 375CT, 375 Chatfield-Taylor, or 375/338 is...... just a 338 mag necked up to 375cal.

Congrats on the moose ! That's gonna be some great eating , kinda disapointed in those accubonds , makes me want to set aside my 7mm loads .
I'm not disappointed with them. They stayed pretty much together w/o losing the core and penetrated from one side to the other, besides the fact that they are quite accurate in my rifle.
