As an importer we are used to having to play the game with the US State Department, keeping them happy with whatever new rules they come up with. Here's the latest:
As of this past Monday, any current 'military' chambered rifles will have to have extra paperwork and be pre sold. In other words, the end user(who is buying to use, not to sell) must be known before importing. It will be impossible for anybody to stock these chamberings according to the latest madness.
This was changed so the US State could keep better track of where their military stuff was ending up. However, some paper pusher decided to apply it to all rifles regardless of action type. I've got Cooper .223 Rem single shots that will be affected!
Hard to say if this will go on for weeks or months before somebody with some common sense decides to fix it.
Moral of the story: US Gov't employeees are just far removed from common sense as some of ours. (and better get that .223 or .308 that you have been thinking about

I was told it was only stuff marked in military chambering like 5.56 and 7.62 if it's marked for civilian use 223 or 308 it's OK

I'm sure that was the intent. However, the boys at State are rejecting our applications with the civilian markings. I'm sure it won't last long but what a lack of common sense for now.

Military Calibres

.
Bureaucrats are the same, no matter where they are. You never know, someone might want to take on an Abrahams tank with a .223.

The same bureaucrats are probably responsible for the gasoline crisis. Nobody checked the oil levels. The oil wells are in Alberta and the western U.S. States.

The dipsticks are in Ottawa and Washington.
.

It's getting to be like Europe. I was talking to a moose hunter visiting from France, he told me all military calibers outright banned over there. .223, 8mm mauser, 30-06, whatever - you can't own them or get ammo for any of them, period.

This is a REALLY dangerous trend!

Right, another way to slow sales, that will really help their economy!

Lets restrict more export sales! Less money coming into the country...

Duh...

I heard the same thing from a supplier in the states. All military, ie/ .223 and .308 will be affected.

This will be an interesting year, with export restrictions and our election.

good thing i already have more .223s and .308s than either me or my kids will ever need in our lifetimes.

all we need now is the canadian gov't to pull some bullsh!t move like some european countries and ban all current and former military chamberings.

NOW is the time for a truly Canadian gun industry to start.
Up until now we have been spoilt and lazy, being right next door to the US.
Hard to compete against the huge US marketing machine.
But if they (the bureaucracy, not the ordinary good people) continue to act like such dorks, well then the hell with them. If they dont want our money, that suits me fine.

I was at Williams Arms today and they mentioned not being able to order anymore 7.62 x 39mm because of the US situation. Just curious, if this never changes, does that mean we can never get any of this ammo or can we order it from some other country?

TIA

Everything affected will have to be ordered from other countries.

i can hardly wait for the Proudly Canadian Made, $2000 version of the Stevens 200.

At least there are other countries that make good guns in those calibers.

I don't see 7.62x39 being a problem, it gets imported from europe anyways. The state deptment is definately being retaded in the midst of a financial crisis.

Well let's not pretend that the sale of firearms/ammo to Canadian civilians amounts to any economic factor one way or the other.
