I had no clue there was so much to know even as far as the ammo is concerned. Wow. Thanks everyone for the input, advice, weblinks and info. I have to save my pennies for a while, so I am going to have some fun researching optics, rifles and ammo

And, maybe one day in the distant future, if I work hard at it now and don't give up, and prepare mentally and physically and practice every day--even more than I would practice and prepare for long range shooting--I'll be able to convince my wife (you think a 1000+ yd kill is challenging!) it's a very worthwhile venture to go do an African hunt! But that'll take years of hard work....and footrubs.

I have to admit getting a kick out of this thread on 1175 yard moose and shooting sparrows of all things at this kind of distance, regardless of your trigger time.
You should come out to "one" of the sanctioned F class 1000 yard shoots. With your ability to make field shots of this caliber you would have no problem cleaning the field at the matches and taking home all the trophies.

Actually in fact at the competitions/fun shoots I entered this year , I sucked BIG TIME!!
The problem I am having is age is catching up with me. Sustained prone shooting kills me now with the neck and back problems I have from abusing my body when I was younger. If I could shoot a match with 10 only rounds total, I could probably do well.
Most of my shooting is now from a bench, even in the field.

I always found that any precision shooter worth his salt needs to be able to apply their skills to hunting, since it involves so much more than hitting a bullseye (Do I have an assured kill for the spot I'm aiming at? How long will the animal hold still? etc. etc.)

I did come out to 3 matches this year, none of which mattered.
40 years ago I did compete and did quite well.
Most of my rifles are not "legal" for competition, in fact I had to speciflly build a rifle to conform to the BCRA match I shot at last June.
Most competitions do not allow for the use of brakes, and wildcat calibers, both of which I am fond of. Before 911 it was easier to make it to sanctioned FCSA shoots, now taking 1 of my 50s south of 49 is a risk I don't want to take.
I think I explained some of my other problems in Mike Raes post.
And for the record I don't shoot 1/4" "all day", but most days can manage a few groups that would qualify as 1/4moa, then like most shooters the groups increase in size with the more shots are fired.

Not sure what most would consider this group to be in size. 5 308 190gr SMKs inside the calipher, the 1 outside was a sighter.

That sighter was 1 st shot from cold bore. I was not concerned about where on the taget the shots were as I was just working up a load, which I seem to have found as I have repeated this type of group 4 times now with this load.
Now I will adjust my turrets to where the shots need to be on paper.
with the first shot 1" low with a cold bore is something to take note of when in the field in a hunting situation. That would be very significant at the distances you hunt at. I guess if it consistently does that it is something you can dial for on the first shot- hopefully throwing first shot low 1" @ 100 is consistent though... Nice group!

I totally agree!!! I need to spend more time with this rifle to ascertain whether it consistently throws the cold bore shot or not.
This is a 308 Win rifle, so it will not see anything for hunting short of gophers.

Many board members have seen Rick perform in the field and would vouch for it. He contributes a lot to the CGN LR community. You, on the other had, have contributed nothing thusfar, unless I missed the "eureka!" post. Eityher you're a part of the problem or part of the solution. If you can contribute, go ahead and contribute. If you have a question, ask away - someone with more knowledge will give you their opinion. If you just want to be a #### and bait other members into some sort of pecker-measuring contest, take it somewhere else.
