Well my 500$ budget Just turned to a thousand ish after the rifle and scope OOPS:runaway: . I picked my rifle, it's a Savage Model 12FVSS .223 . Now I will need some glass. So the question is, what is a good scope for a decent price? I don't plan on shooting much further than 500-600 yards.. what power of scope would be good for that distance?? I have seen some nikon's and leoupold around 400-500$ on the EE. I think one was 6-14 power and the other was 6-24. I can't remeber.. any thoughts

P.S I know I shouldn't cheep out on the glass I'm just looking for " The best bang for my buck "

6-24 or 8-32 with target dot or super fine x-hair if you are shooting bulls at these distances.

Also take a look at a fixed 24, 36 or 48x scope.

8.5-25X50 Long Range Target by Leupold. Can be got near new for under a grand.

Sightron makes a couple of excellent scopes for well under a grand.

My F Class rifles all use the Super Sniper. Three are 20X and one is 16X. For your application the 20X would be the better choice. Scope is also available as a 10X. I think all three are the same size.

This is a solid 30MM scope with decent reticle and optics.

I have 5 years on two of them. The clicks are 100% accurate. The knobs have a O ring to make the turret waterproof. This makes the clicks kinda muddy. On my wife's I took the O rings off, so the clicks have a solid click feel.

Best thing about these scopes is that they cost about $300.

Is there a canadian dealer for super sniper? I have looked around a couldn't find anything

No. They're marketed by an American firm by the name SWFA and they don't export outside the US. In Kanada, the closest thing out there for quality and price range is the Falcon series of scopes being sold by board member Cyberk (aka: Mike). Check out what he carries. I'm sure you'll find something to your liking.

Nikon Buckmaster/Monarch, Bushnell ELite 4200 have excellent scopes in the $400 to 600 range. Great optics and mechanicals.

I prefer mil dot reticles as it makes for quick field adjustment. The Nikon BDC reticle might work well for gophers.

Leupold makes great scopes too but then tend to cost more for the same features. A used scope could be a best bang$$$.

If you don't mind spending more, the new LR Sightron SIII has amazing glass and mechanicals for under $1000.

If you want to punch paper, a 24X is a nice mag level. 32X is also great but few scopes offer you great glass for low dollars. Elite 4200 is likely your best choice of available scopes in Canada. Sightron would be my pick if I had more money. Nikon Monarch ED 32X might just be the solution but their reticle choices are weak.

...all the above and you can still shoot at a long distance with a lower powered scope - you just need a larger target to accurately sight on.

There are 3 scopes on the EE that caught my eye. One is a NIKON Buckmasters-6-18x40 and the other is a Nikon Monarch 5-20x 44mm or 6-24x40 4200*elite. What are the major differences with the monarch and the buckmaster??? What would you pic and why??

p.s. both nikons have the nikoplex retical and the Bushnell has the multi-x

I have the Nikon BM IN 6-18X40 on my 22-250 and the optics are very clear. I have looked through both the M and the BM, the clarity is very close. Both have 1/8" click for adj. something you might want to think about before you buy one.
For the $ I would get the Nikon BM.

Misticplayer,
What do think about the Sightron Slll compare to Zeiss Conquest?
I am about to buy another Zeiss in 6.5-20x50. I have never looked through the S Slll but I have read the reviews on it and all were very good.
I prefer to check out the optics before I buy them. the problem with S Slll is that no one sells them around where I live.

I'll add one more to the pot, I know a guy at my local gun store that can get me a good deal on the new bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42 mil dot 640$ with leupold 30mm rings and bases. I looked around online and that looks like a hell of a deal. Anyone with experience with the 6500? any pro's and con's?

are you saying 1/8" cilick is better or worse than 1/4". I would think it would be better? But I am a newb, the more I look at all the options the more I relize I got a lot to learn LOL

Having used scopes with 1/8th clicks I really don't see much of a point in it. Unless you can shoot better than 1/4 MOA accuracy there isn't much point in having finer clicks than that. That being said it wouldn't really be high on my list of criteria on a scope, both with accomplish the same thing. You just have to dial in a lot more 'clicks' in order to adjust for a long range with 1/8th clicks than you would have to with 1/4 clicks.

The only scope I would even consider in that price range is the Falcon Optics 4-14FFP with 0.1mil dials. But that's just me. I consider FFP and matching reticle/dials to be a must.

I have a Sightron SIII LR MD and it is awesome. I have used a lot of good to excellent quality scopes and the Sightron never ceases to amaze me. I now have it rigged up on a tripod because I don't have the mounts in yet for my new rifle:(. It is not hard to look at staples on fence posts at well over 1000 meters.

Thanks to Mystic precision.
