Deer, Head shots, 22 250

It's illegal in Alberta to hunt big game with a .22 calibre rifle. With a barnes tsx or a 60 gr partition I wouldn't hesitate though if legal.

:nest: Legal in Manitoba I have never seen a neckshot that was not fatal. With smaller calibre firearms shot placement is CRUCIAL and NO FMJ. Not recommended but with the right shot placement, FATAL.
Pete......:):):)

Head shots are bad, imo. One small error = horrific wound. And I don't know about you, but I sure am not perfect. Haven't we had this thread before?

A Guy I Hunt with uses a .22-250 when he is sitting, he shoot a really nice 10 point buck right below the eye at 150 yards dropped it on the spot not even a kick. Hornady 52 gr. HPBT did the trick. But I do agree it may not be the best choice in all situations.

captain deadly!

just shoot them tight behind the front shoulder with a 53 gr Barnes TSX or 60 gr Nosler Partition.........

I went 5 for 5 on head shots on deer last year but that was with a .280 Rem. I treated it like bow hunting and tried to get close though. Gotta know your rifle too.

No bloodshot meat that way and I primarily hunt for the culinary aspects of my game.

Any thoughts on Hunting deer with a 22 250, head shots for quick kills.

At what aproximate size would you say a deer brain is.
Golf ball, orange or grapefruit.

I am contemplating taking a couple of deer this way, ... this year.

That's a worrying comment!

Big Orange Small Grapefruit.
Good Luck:cool:
Pete.....

And this is an even more worrying comment!

Small orange if that....and we wonder why hunting and shooting sports are under constant attack. It's completely irresponsible discussions like this that throw hunting into bad light and will over time end shooting sports. Remember this is a public forum and the people who want do ban all aspects of shooting are using forums like this to build their case. Be responsible when commenting please!

I have a friend that shot the face off a whitetail doe. He thought it dropped at the shot, walked over and found nothing. Turned around and saw the deer standing 10 feet from him in the bush, no face left and just standing there stunned. He was using a 270 with 130g SST very explosive but did not knock the deer out.

Did he get the deer?

Did he get the deer?

Almost misses the point, doesn't it?

Our goal is to kill as quickly and humanely as possible. Considering the possibility of making a slight mistake while aiming or a last second twitch by the target, a behind the shoulder double lung shot is, IMO, the most ethical way to harvest game.
