The coolness of cartridges...

375 H&H is Classically Cool like Coca-cola and levi jeans. Sure there might be other "trendy" cartridges out there like the Ruger 375 or the 375 RUM tum tugger but none can hold a candle to the original chambering in this most usefull caliber

So I may not be Kool, because i shoot a 6.5X55 BUT it iss in an express gun, and IMHO THAT is UBER KOOL!:D
Besides, i have 6.5WSM, 6.5WSSM, 6.5/284 in my stablke so one of them would be kool maybe??
Not that I was ever accused of running running with the herd!
Cat

All of these qualify you to be KOOL.

You're welcome.;)

I am devastated!:runaway: I just now find out that I have a large collection of "uncool" rifles.:( What will I do????? Here I have been hunting, collecting, shooting, and generally BS'ing all these years with these silly old things and didn't know how obviously out-of-touch I've been. Imagine - 30-06, 8x57, 6.5x55, 7x57, and all those other silly, useless old cartridges with no "knockdown power" or "flat trajectory". It must have been pure luck that I ever managed to scare anything at all. :p:p

Old does not = UnKOOL.

Velocity does not = KOOL.

Lots of old cartridges are cool. Lots of fast cartridges are unKool.

You lack a basic understanding of KOOL.
;)

Noting wrong with the .375 H&H, but the .375 RUger is what the H&H would look like i it was introduced today.

The H&H was cool, but the RUger is the KOOLEST.

Is it possible to have a cartridge that is TOO kool?

One that is SOOOOOO kool that it can't even be called kool anymore.

Russ...

30-30

If you have a 30-30 lever action (and many do) you are not Kool. Sorry...Yes, it works great in it's parameters, but uncool. Now, if you have a 30-30 bolt action or single shot..Whoa, you are in Kool land.

a friend stopped by a couple days ago with his newly acquired 30-30...a Marlin 336T, straight grip and 18-1/2" barrel...now that's a cool 30-30...I once had a bolt action 30-30 that was as unkool as you can get....

.308

Not Kool. Maybe in a HB bolt action "sniper" rig, it's cool, but barely. Still more cool than a .30-06 I guess...Efficient and capable cartridge, of course, but lacking that Kool factor unless housed in some semi auto like a M-14.

now here's one I can't understand....it's popularity in "tactical" and "sniper" rigs is certainly not based on it's ballistic performance....even a 6.5 Swede can beat those numbers......as a hunting cartridge...I guess it works but bullets in the weight range required for deer are shorter and less arodynamic than the same weight bullet in a 7mm....can't understand it's popularity as a deer cartridge when the 7-08 is available.....but I have a 7-08 in a Rem Titanium so I'm biased.

30-06

About as UNKOOL as you can get, if housed in a typical bolt action. If it is in a M1 Garand, it gets cool points. If it's a Mdl 1895 Lever action, you are into full on Koolness, and it's about as Kool as a 30-06 will ever be...

the 30-06 is way kool.....guys who use it on purpose know what they have....it doesn't get the respect it desrves (kinda like the 7Rem Mag and the 243Win)....it's too popular to be seen as kool by some but the reason it is popular is becasue it's that good...which makes it kool....

.300H&H

Very Kool. Mostly because it's hardly around much these days. Just about any rifle in this chambering is gonna be Kool

kool as a historic cartridge...only thing it has over a 308 Norma,300 Win or 300 Wtby is the long sloped shoulder that feeds well, or so I'm told...I've owned a few 300 Winnys and never had a feeding problem, never heard of a feeding problem with a 300 Wtby so I'm not sure what that's all about....

.308 Norma

Kool...Not many use it, but it's a good cartridge. Very Kool if you where to have a new rifle built for it.

Here's a strange one....shorter than a 300 Winny but most owners will tell you it's faster.....308 Norma owners must have access to the same magic pixie dust that 280 owners use to make thier 280's as fast as the 7Rem Mag....I suppose it's a good cartridge to chamber if your action won't hold a 300 Win or a 300 Wtby....

.300 Winchester Magnum

A very capable cartridge, it would be Kool, except so many of the people using it are retards. I don't know how many times I've heard stupid crap like "I can't believe it didn't fall down! I shot it with my 300 MAG"

This isn't the fault of the cartridge, of course, but the amount of losers thinking that the "300 MAG" has some mystical killing properties is a turn off...

I've seen the exact opposite in my travels...300 Winny shooters usually know they have a supercharged 30-06....nothing magic in adding 200-300fps to the same bullet as compared to the 30-06...if the '06 is good....adding more speed makes it gooder...

.300 Weatherby

In many respects, this is the KING of the .300's...Not as popular these days, but it's Kool. Too bad most that buy them either can't handle them, or can't use it's abilities. Pretty Kool, if you know what you are doing. The rest get scope eye.

if you can handle a 300 Winny you can handle the Wtby....I've owned them simultaneously.....adding 100-150 fps to the 300 Win does not put it in a different class like some like to think...

the rest of the big 30's....if you can use the trajectory get one...

I thought .308 was Kewl if it was in stainless with a synth stock...did I just blow $700 for nothing?

"Nothing" may be a bit harsh. You just didn't add to your own KOOL factor, that's all. You still have a perfectly servicable firearm, just not one that the KOOL KARTRIDGE KROWD would be caught dead with......;)

I heard a fellow say the very same thing about his 300Weatherby just the other day. :dancingbanana:

.

The absolute COOOOLEST cartridges out there are the 257 Roberts, 7x57 and 375H&H. All are old and not the fastest in their respective caliber. If I could have three guns only, I'd consider them.

BTW ...... The 375Ruger MAY be the King, but it definitely lacks in the cool dept.

.

While i agree with most of your premise Gathouse you have to take the Rifle a un Kool cartridge is chambered for a little farther. for example a 30-06 chambered in a Holland & Holland double rifle while not entirely practical would be very cool.

Kjohn, if you are devestated, how about me? No one has mentioned the 45-70!
When I was a kid in war time starting out hunting in the boondocks of the more northerly part of your province, I hunted with an original Springfield Trapdoor. Ammunition was desperately scarce for it and a neighbor gave me nearly two boxes of Winchester 45-70 cartridges, probably made in the 1920s. I was so careful with those shells that I still have about half of them. And to think that isn't kool. Now, I reload for and shoot a Marlin 45-70 more than I shoot any other calibre.
We, my wife and I, have twice visited the flats above the Little Bighorn River in Wyoming, where the contemptious one-time-General, George Custer and his infamous 7th Calvary, had their 45-70 trapdoor carbine rifles outclassed by Native arrows.
But still not KOOL.
We have searched for days at the remains of a US fort of the 1890s in Arizona. We found handsful of 45-70 empties. A surprising number had blown apart on firing, leaving the base and about 3/8 inch of case, along with the other part of the case. And aha, that was the very reason the 7th Calvary soon discovered a rifle with a piece of the brass case stuck in the chamber was no match for a large number of skilled bow shooters with arrows tipped with skillfully made flint arrow heads.
but the 45-70 is not K O O L!!!!
The tears are dripping on my keyboard.

The 375 H&H is like Marilyn Monroe, classically ###y! Whereas, the 375 Ruger is like Paris Hilton, the $lutty young sister!:D
