I have a Mauser M38 6.5x55 rifle here that a friend asked me to change the scope on it and sight it in, it had Weaver bases on it when he bought it...The problem I'm having ,is that the windage is as far as it can go to the right and it still shoots 3-4 inches to the left at 50 yards. The rings on it are "See-Thru"( not my favorite) so the bolt will clean the rear of the scope. I suspect that one of the bases is installed crooked because then you look at rifle the scope seems the point slightly to the right!!! Does anyone here have an idea how to fix this without redrilling and taping new holes
Thanks
Bob

I thought of that , but still need the height of the See-Thru's...I don't think we"ll find "normal" rings high enough. Also that doesn't mean the holes in the new bases would match the holes in the recever..????
Thanks

Try changing the scope rings around , put a dab of marker or something that will not be wiped off and try the front ring as it is and the back ring turned 180 degrees and bore/ laser sight then test fire . If that worsens the situation replace the back ring to the way it started and turn the front ring 180 degrees , then bore/laser sight then test fire.. If this doesn't work you could try making the front ring the back and moving the back ring to the front and try again. By moving them left to right and front to back you may get it on. After that you are going to need other rings to try. But installing the proper mounts correctly is the only really right way to go.

Since the gun has been altered with the hole drilling, get the bolt handle cut and lowered, that solves the bolt clearance issue. Leupold bases, as suggested above will help with the side to side issue. If the holes were drilled correctly for spacing then Leupold bases are available to fit!

Likely bolt clearance issues
Or standard safety.
If it is a safety issue, switch the trigger to a Bold set-up with side safety. OP-93 or OP-95 (can't remember the #'s).
You can always have the bolt forged down if you can't get it cut and welded.

The bolt handle is already bent but there's not a lot of space between the rear of the scope and the bolt handle...see pic
The problem is that the front Weaver base is crooked, is off to the right. I tried switching the rings front and back ,inverting right to left...etc as suggested but it's still off. The last thing I tried was the take out the front screw on the front base and was able to move to the left a little bit and it works...not much but with the bore sighter I see that I would some room for the windage and could bring it to shoot center. Now I know that the problem is ...all I have to do is find a solution:confused:

That bolt can be bent further then that, and ground for ocular clearance as well. A Bold trigger with side safety will solve the safety clearance issue, and Leupold bases will allow you to adjust for the off center bolt holes. The best way to fix it would be to weld up the holes and re-drill, but welding on receivers raises a whole bunch of other issues, so the external fixes are probably your best bet. FWIW - dan

Thanks for all the suggestions...I think I'm going to give the guy back his rifle and let him take it to a gunsmith ( which I am not!!)
I just got a phone call from my brother in law , to tell me that my sister(51) has brain cancer, so I really don't feel like working on guns at this time
Thanks
