I had a chat with a young woman this week, married mother of one.
I know her pretty well, and know enough about her to think that her moral compass is in check with about 85% of hunters who ckaim to be ethical and moral, etc etc.

She had a mule deer tag and was on land that she had right of access to be on. She was with her husband and her father in law, who brought her out to try and fill her tag. At 264 yards she saw a deer. She got out of the truck and moved a little close, 15 yrds or so closer, and took the animal with a single shot. Moments later a bow hunter comes out of a spot of bush and is none to pleased that she shot this deer. The deer was a big mature buck, and scored higher than anything I have ever shot or been around to see shot.

Words were exchanged and they took their deer. An hour later they were stopped by Conservation. A report had made that they had chased an animal down in their truck, and that she was not the shooter and that the other men did not have tags.

A very lengthy investigation followed with their returning to the area, measuring foot prints, stride distance, tire tracks, etc etc etc.

That winter the case was still not resolved and young woman was ver upset about it all. She decided to go ice fishing one weekend with her husband, and on the way back were stopped and vehicle searched. All was good so they continued on.

Two weeks later, her husband went ice fishing by himself and was stopped again and asked for linenses and to see his catch.

A month later he was stopped again. same thing happened.

It is now march and the young woman gets a visit from the CO. The matter is done, they are at fault for nothing. However, she is advised that if another complaint is made about her, it will not be so good.

The bow hunter who reported them was also a CO. who resided not far from where they lived.

Assuming all of the story to be true (which, knowing nothing else about the story, is probably a big assumption), it sounds like CO's looking after their 'brethren'. I'm sure it happens among CO's just as it happens in every other occupation, colour or creed. Is there something else?

I guess there are always two sides to a story but women do sometimes come under extra scrutiny sometimes because some guys just can't accept the fact that they can hunt right alongside the men. Contrary to popular belief, not all are afraid to break a nail! Whatever actually happened here, it's unfortunate and hopefully it does not disuade anyone from hunting in the future but it's been my experience that there are usually two sides to a story with the truth lying somewhere in the middle and sometimes there are just plain idiots out there.

If any of this story is true, then both of the CO's are subject to Criminal Code charges. I would never let something like this lie still and go after both of them to the fullest extent. Two things here, "Official misdirection" and "Due Diligence". Has to do with people not doing the job they are paid to do and how well they do that. I would suspect that with the right person investigating this, a "Good" cop with some scruples and morals, charges could be layed and these two nits could face some serious problems. 1st, call thier boss and lay a formal complaint, right now, do not hesitate do not pass go. 2nd find a reliable cop and have a sit down with him/her, tell him that these two have drumed up problems, made up a story and harassing you, that is very bad for anyone who is supposed to be enforcing the law.

Scott

I do, but she's not like me. She's quiet.
There are people out there who just put up with stuff, and meekly go about their way. She even went so far as to say, "well maybe when he saw the truck, he thought we were chasing it" I got pissed for her trying to make excuses... but that's how she is. He knew damn well the deer wasn't being chased when he was sat in his stand waiting on it.

There are 3 sides to every story, in this case they'd be her side, the bow hunter's side, and of course, the truth. Unless we hear from the bow hunter its impossible to say who's right or wrong, or what happened. It would be good to hear from the rifle hunter as well, not just a second hand story. I'm not calling anybody a liar, but it is easier to tell a story that leans your way, when nobody can contradict you.

Far as I know, Bow hunting is not permitted while the regular gun season is under way.( some provinces allow cross bow during the gun season, cause cross bows arent allowed in the regular archery season like Manitoba for example. Not Ontario though) Reg's get complicated.:(

But really, who in their right mind would be out there with any bow when you can get one with a rifle?

Also, most bow hunters are good sports about someone else shooting their game?.:) specially during rifle season, almost anything can happen.

Was the bow hunter in full camo and totally unseen by the gun hunters? If so, Thats very dangerous, Thats why you cant bow hunt here during the gun hunts.

With a bow the game is always a question of, "will it come into range"?.

It's no ones until it's down. We all know what that's about.:D

Bow hunters are permitted during rifle season in all provinces that I know of but they must follow provincial rifle season regulations during a rifle season and in Saskatchewan, that would mean wearing hunter colours.

Lots of dedicated bow hunters hunt the entire year with nothing but a stick and string.

The three sides of a story is a quote I have used often:)
All I am going by is her story.
I do believe her, as I know her quite well.
I also can imagine the frustration of being a bow hunter, waiting on a huge buck to come into range, and then see it drop.

Not real sure, but pretty sure you are wrong on that one,

Same thing applies in ON....you can bow-hunt during the regular gun hunt
BUT like you said, blaze orange must be worn.
