Hello,

Here is a question: I have gun safe which I bought from Canadian Tire, just regular one made of metal, for rifles. I am storing there my non-restricted rifle (unloaded, no trigger lock) and ammunition in boxes. Safe is locked with the key all the time. Is there any limit on ammunition I can store with in this safe together with the rifle, let's say 200 catriges or 1000 catriges ? :)

Thank you

No limit. The CFC website is your friend:

http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/storagetransport_e.asp

Storing Firearms Safely

Unload and lock your firearms!

Store the ammunition separately or lock it up. It can be stored in the same locked container as the firearm.

Non-restricted firearms

* Attach a secure locking device, such as a trigger lock or cable lock (or remove the bolt) so the firearms cannot be fired; or
* Lock the firearms in a container or room that is hard to break into.

Thank you Stevo,

I was thinking the same but my friend told me that while he was listening the course (recently) for non-restricted, he was told about some specific limit on ammunition to store with in the safe when non-restricted firearm is inside.

So now it is clear for me :)

Where do people come up with this sh*t? I mean, who starts these ridiculous "facts" about ammo quantities/hollow point ammo, etc etc.

I believe there is a limit to the number of POUNDS of gunpowder you can store without an explosives certificate. Someting like 75,000 rounds or so.

Ammo Limit

Its 50,000 Rounds Your Allowed At Home, Its In The Fed.reral Mining Act. I Had A Home Inspection Last Year And The Inspector Verified That Its 50,000 Rounds. I'm Only At 3000 Now.

You can store 225 kilograms of powder that is in loaded ammunition (class 6 div 1) and 75 Kilograms of powder. I really wish guys would look up regs instead of just guessing...

(iii) 225 kilograms of explosives contained in ammunition of Division 1 of Class 6; or

It's not 225 kg of loaded ammo, it's loaded ammo that has 225 kg of powder contained in it.

There's a hell of a big difference between the two.

Correct. Thanks for pointing that out. First line of previous post cleaned up...

Just had a mental picture of some poor bastard pulling all the bullets from my reloads and pouring all the powder onto a scale to see if it adds up to 225 Kgs... :D

Hell thats make alot of little .22lr :)

Now how would they determine the actual weight ??

Given that powder is 1/10 of the actual weight, this would give you about 2250 kg of ammo :)

2.5t of ammo.. Guess I need a bigger bunker

So the 75000 or so centrefire rounds I have in my basement are still o.k. And the 20 lbs of black powder.. Only a few on my fire dept. know about it.. If my house catches on fire, and I cannot get it out with the couple of fire extinguishers I have handy.. I am gonna grab the family and run.:runaway:

There is a SAAMI video that shows that smokeless ammo that explodes due to fire is not a danger to anyone unless it is confined (like in a barrel). Otherwise the pressure never builds up enough to be dangerous.
