Recent Canoe trip with my brother in Northern Ontario....
IMG_9644.jpg

The area behind the tent was a steep cliff with the lake in front of us, so every animal used it as a major highway all night long. My brother visiting from England woke me at 3AM asking if I heard the loud sound of branches cracking behind us .... turned out to be a scary mule deer passing through . The 870 did keep us company though on our 3AM wildlife Recce. I think I will mount a side shell mount next as fumbling with pockets probably is not a good idea if an unwanted visitor decides he is ready for a midnight snack.

you need a single point sling mount and sling, so whe nyou fall over or sling the gu stays with you.
houge rubber butstock.
And a flashlight forend, eather railed forend with light, or a surefire forend.

If you aren't in Griz,or Polar bear territory, and you feel you are in need of bear defence I think you should say at home with you night light.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

After a few encounters this season at Algonquin with some moose I would of felt alot 'better' with a shotgun or some firearm. Silly Ontario Provincal Parks and the prohibition of firearms...

Mind you we should of possibly not of been in the marsh around dusk with another 3-5 hours of canoeing ahead of us, but hey, sometimes life throws you some curve balls and you have to deal with s**t, rite?

I would of been hauling my 12.5 Police 870 with 4 shot Mesa and a Speedfeed Youth Stock. 32" and 8 lbs with 4 2/3 12GA in the tube. might be a bit heavy but thats the price you pay.

eta - Where abouts in Northern Ontario did you go camping? As much as my team and I love Algo we want to get out to the rockies next year and hit up a few other spots in Ontario or other provinces.

Sorry to offend you Captain Onion, :kickInTheNuts: by going canoeing with my shotgun....

Not offended at all.I get way more of a chuckle out of it than anything else.
Your title does suggest bear defence thread

ha ha,black bears kill more people.
Go figure!
About twice as many, considering there are over 10X as many, and taking into account that black bears inhabit over 80% of Canada vs grizzlys less than 40%

Theres always the chance of running into "other" issues in the woods. Like say a meth lab in the woods, that the skids who put it there would rather you didn't tell anyone you stumbled across there operation.
