I've been hunting grouse and woodcock w/ my great grandmaother's LC Smith 20ga. I get alot of pleasure hunting with it, but there are times when I' going through heavy cover, or in bad weather when I feel pretty guilty subjecting it to the abuse. I'm thinking it's time to pick up a utility gun. I'm thinking 20 ga., pump or semi, choked ic or mod, or w/ tubes. Whose got a suggestion? Funds are most definatly limited so I'm thinking a 870, but am open to ideas.

I'm picking up a BPS in 20 this weekend. I played with it a bit last week at the store and am sold on it. I was gonna get an upland special, but they don't have any 20ga in stock.

I figure a BPS while a bit more expensive then the 870, just looks a bit more classy. I also looked at used ithaca's. But they go for about the same price as the 870 used, sometimes more, so I settled in the browning.

If you've been hunting with a 20 ga. Elsie, you've been spoiled pretty good. Very few pumps or semis are going to feel, carry, or handle as well as that gun. Going through brush and heavy cover may be tough on you, but it does very little harm to a gun. As long as you keep the metal oiled, and rub some paste wax into the stock and the joints where it meets the metal, you'll not do the gun any harm.

Of the few guns I'd consider (off the top of my head) as substitutes are the Remington model 31 or the Ithaca 37, both in 20 ga. Remember, weight is your enemy in an upland gun.

Oh, and you'd better get us some pictures of that gun, posted real soon!
