Anybody have the dimensions for a Savage Barrel nut wrench

In Frank de Haas' book, "Bolt Action Rifles", you will find a good drawing for making the key.

Hardness; 47-50 HRC
Inside bore dia; 1.325" plus/minus 0.002"
OD; 3.0"
Thickness; 5/8"
4 5-40 UNC screws equally spreaded on the cirlce (every 90 Deg)
Pins must protrude to get 1.190" base circle 9to reach the groove bottoms of the locking screw)

Be aware that there is two different locking ring sizes for the Savage. The above is the most common one.

I bought one a while back from SSS and it was too cheap to resist. Their product is top notch and then you know you won't have to go through all the work of making one.

But then again alot of people are more handy than I am, which most likely includes you.

Good luck with the project

Ditto, Fred Moreo at Sharp shooter Supply is the guru. I have the wrench, a trigger and now a stock from them. Great stuff and that stock got here within a week. Check out w.savageshooters.com lots of Savage stuff and a great forum.

Savage now has two nut sizes, one is larger than the other.

Buy a nice wrench for both sizes from Brownell's Inc.

I made one by carefully laying out the circumference of the hole on a piece of steel, along with the locations of the grooves. Drilled holes through where the grooves are. Drilled out and bored to size to fit a barrel nut. Place over the barrel nut, tap brass pins into the "half holes" which remain, and the nut grooves.
Some Savage nuts have round bottom grooves, others square.
Another way is to place small rods in opposite grooves, and slip a large wrench over. The rods will prevent the wrench from turning, and will allow pressure to be applied to the nut.
By far the easiest way is to buy a wrench.

Savage

I have a tool in my shop that came with items I picked up a while back and it has 99 Savage Barrel Wrench marked on it. It's the strangest thing. I can't figure out how it would be used on a barrel.
I will take pictures tomorrow if anyone is interested.

Does SSS ship stocks here as well? I wasn't sure if it would be a PITA or not.

PS, Its not much work with a wire edm machine!

Yes they do, I just got their Monte Carlo sporter, took 1 week from the e-mail to delivery. Perfect drop-in fit for my center-feed Stevens. Very happy. Heck you're in Ontario , they're in Ohio, even quicker.

I should add the reason it was so quick getting here is they had one in stock. I think they ask you to allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.
