Help with advice

A friend of mine is looking at picking up a rifle in .270, and was asking me whats the best power of scope to use with it for hunting deer and cyotes out to 200meters.

I suggested at the time a 3-9x40mm but my experience is mostly precision work, not hunting.

Did I give good advice?

2-7 is highly underrated. or even a fixed 4x.

really can't go wrong with a 3-9x40 it's the average scope that does everything. Sort of like the claim that the 270 is the average sized round that does everything.

but I'll never buy a 270

Can't go wrong with the advice for the intended use. 3-9x40 is a nice sized scope for most hunting rifles and the 9x is plently for 200m. I rarely turn mine up past 6 when in more open areas.

3-9X is the way to go...4X is a bit too much in close quarters....6X is WAY too much magnification in the bush and may be lacking when scoping a coyote at 400+ yards (I know the 6X Leupy has what appears to approach a cult following,you can have them)....3-9X does it all....IMHO,..of course.....with the 2-7X running a close second....but for a mere two hundred meters....a 4X or 6X will do...until he steps into the bush after in which case the 2-7X or 3-9X would be better...are you confused yet?

3-9x is plenty and gives good versatility. And you could easily get away with less magnification.

I go along with the 2 to 7. I've had two of them and I went from that to a Redfield 1 to 4, which is even faster in the bush.
For your coyotes the 2 to 7 would be ideal.

Your own suggestion to your friend was correct. It's no accident that that configuration is such a common hunting scope.

Hey Slushee, i'm probably hunting the same areas you are so i think your are on track with the 3x-9x. Excellent range of magnification for the longer shots and great up close as well. Its what i put on my .22-250 for coyotes.

Not only is a 3-9x40 a great selection it's usually at the best price point.
