Allright I was given an sks as payment for some work I did. It's a norinco with choate stock, muzzle break, "capco" side mount and bushnell scope. I've got a few questions.

Number one: the gun functions fine but the chamber is rough. Is this just due to the fact that it's a Norinco ? I know that the chineese copys are usualy a little rougher than others hence the cheaper price.

Number two: The gun has a "capco" side mount that is quite low on the gun. It needs to be removed to get the bolt out of the reciever for cleaning. It's secured with 3 tapered head screws and dosn't have much room for movement. Is this going to hold zero half decent even though its removed for cleaning? I only use it for plinking so it should be just as good (or better) as one of the reciever cover mounts shouldnt it?

Third and last: Any scope reccomendations? The scope on it has scratches all over the lenses and I think it's taken a beating. I use the gun mostly for plinking and am looking for something "economical". Dose an sks have enough range to make a 3-9 worth it, or should a fixed 4 work well? Any ideas on a better mount?

if there is any movment there will be loss of zero to some degree. As far as a cope, there is no point going more than 4x.

That makes sense, but I know that the reciever cover mounts cant completely keep zero either. As long as it's still realativly the same IE if Im plinking I can hit what Im aiming at.

I was thinking a variable 1.5x to 4x scope might work well on an sks?
 
I'd just leave the scope off. I like shooting my sks's with just the iron sights.
The other day I was shooting 550 yards with iron sights at a log and hitting it pretty consistantly.

Id like to, but the front sight was removed for the muzzle break and is long gone Im afraid:( It would have to have some reaaalll good sights to shoot 550 yards as well:plol

I agree, the sks round is a super fine all round cartridge .It will shoot further and hit harder than most 300 magnums.

550 yards with an SKS and Iron sights?, what are you shooting at? A fallen RED WOOD?.

Christ I wouldent trust an SKS to hit Jack s**t after 350 yards nevermind 550.

I owned and hunted with a Yugo M59 (first model) for a few years and I cannot for the life of me see them performing like that.

The loose fit and production quality, nevermind the crude and short based leaf sights just doesnt work for any sort of accuracy.

As much as I disagree with people who say the SKS is not accurate. 550 yards with iron sights is nuts! Are you sure you're not mistaken? I can get 1-2 inch groups with mine at 100 yards all day but I have a scope.
 
If the log is half the size of the log I just pinched off I don't really see him having a problem with hitting it out to 500+ :D

As for people knocking the sks, I love it, Im thinking of buying another, but fact is its not a long range sniper rifle.

Anyway any word on the rough chamber? Anyone seen other Norcs like this?,

As far as the scope and mount go Im going to leave it, shoot non corrosive and just be a slack ass when it comes to cleaning. Maybe replace the scope with a red dot. It was a free gun so no matter what it's worth it. I possibly may buy another sks and leave it original so it's easy to clean when I shoot surplus ammo.
 
Do you have any pics of the rough chamber? Is it just rust or does it look like it was machined like that. That would probably be a little better as far as getting more response, both mine arent rough in the chamber itself.

I'll try to get one tomorow. There is some rust, but the actual metal looks like it's rough as well. It always worked fine, but the brass is specled looking when it ejects. When I cleaned it last I gave special attention to the the chamber using a brush and some oil/compound.
 
I'm sure on the distance. My friend was shooting his 308 at the same log and he used his laser range finder on it before we started. And I guess to be more accurate... consistanly for an SKS. I'd say 5 or 6 out of 10 shots were hitting the log.... but any I missed were damn close as we could see the rounds hitting. Log is sitting in a lake... we're shooting from about 100 feet above the lake. And yes there is a large hill on the other side so no rounds are skipping over. I was using a bunch of tracer as well.
I'll film the next time we go shoot there so you guys can see for yourselves. My sks seems to be really accurate... and i know thats not the case for most of them.
Oh and if anyone wants to come shooting... just PM me. I'll go any time its not raining... I have 2 SKS's and half a box of tracer still :) I don't mind bringing out the ar180b if you want too... you can buy the ammo for that one though. lol
