I've been talking to Rick over at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply about a gun I want to build. I must say he's been amazingly helpful and I will most definitely be doing my business with him. But I was wondering who else in Canada builds custom rifles? Who has the best reputation for quality and prices?

There are a few gunsmiths in Canada. I have only had work done with Rick at ATRS (simple pillar bedding job) and Lyle Linkaitis (Ultimate Accuracy). Dennis Sorenson in BC does good work; I have never ordered anything from him but a guy I knew in MB had a rifle done up by him - it shot well. I don't know who is the "best" gunsmith; I don't think there is one grandmaster of smiths in Canada but the guys I listed I have seen their work and it is top notch. If you are looking for the cheapest smith - I don't think there is a solid answer for that. Shipping can really take any sort of savings that you would have on a rifle so I would recommend that unless you are building a complete gun go with someone closeby that has a solid rep. If you are looking for a complete gun - you should draw up your specs on it and ask for completed quotes from the smiths mentioned above and go with what you are comfortable with.

Rick is a great guy.

In BC, the three guys I would recommend without hesitation are:

Mick McPhee
Bill Mackereth and
Dennis Sorenson

Mick also makes custom 30 Cal cut rifled barrels.

Do not use Dennis Sorenson (guntech)!!!!

He is busy enough :)

Ask Mick about his first perfect relay at the Farky and the top three rifles shot there in F open.

Mr. Uno may have "retired" but he used to know which end the bullet came out of a pipe. Might still build the occasional bug holer just to annoy the youngsters.

Rick builds some nice boomers the even shoot beyond a few hundred yards. Although it is likely Glockamaniac that does all the 'hard' work.

Leeper on this board also builds some nice shooting iron. Weird stuff though like 303 British and Winchester actions.

There are many others that build great shooting rigs in Canada. Look at past posts to see who others have used with success.

Sam Adams, Hilden, NS, has bulit rifles that have won 7 Canadian Sniper(Precision Rifle) titles + countless other titles.
Joe Kroetsch, Ontario, is considered the best by many.

Keith Cunningham at MilCun does outstanding work on Precision, TR, F-class and AR's.

This gentlemen often gets overlooked, I've shot a couple of his rifles and they are "top shelf". I have a project underway at ATR and I have been very pleased to date. Choosing either one IMO is money well spent!

Sourcing the market is a good thing to do when looking for knowledge on a particular caliber but don't forget to ask about components of the build and timeline on what the guys you talk to reccommends. Write them down and compare them because there are a lot of gun builders out there but, there aren't that many that do enough of it to carry the product and backup for the caliber you choose. There are advantages to a one stop shopping trip when building a custom gun.

THat's my two cents.

P.S. I've bought 5 guns from Rick. 3 of them and soon to be another 2 were full customs and the support was great.

Gerry and Francis Gaulin at Armtech in Sherbrooke are making some very fine precision rifles these days.

Ian Robertson sells all the components for some equally fine precision rifles, and he is an active participant on CGN.

I'm sure many of the guys will post pics as I will, there are tons of pics on the website in the homepage as well as in the Gallery. Stay Tuned

Any pictures of some of this work?

Hows this?
