I am looking to get this rifle as my first firearm and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it? I was also on what would be a better all around caliber 7mm Rem. Mag. or 300 Rem. Ultra Mag?
Thank you for any help.

The 7mm RM is all you need. The ammo is readily available everywhere. The recoil is tolerable and iy shoots very flat.

What are you hunting? And do you handload?

The 35 whelen is a devastatingly good cartridge, but kind of favors hand loaders.

7mm's are deadly, there's no need to go with 'ultra super mega lo fat hyper-short' or any of that crap. If you really want to that's fine, but it's not necessary to kill game that's for sure.

Foxer is right. IMO you must reload to take advantage of the .35 Whelen. You can also make light loads with pistol bullets for grouse, rabbits and plinking.

I have the gun in .270.. I've had trouble sighting it in so far because of my scope, but I got that sorted out.. Might try again sometime soon. Its a really nice gun, looks great, feels great, bolt is smooth. I can't speak for the accuracy until I've tested it

I own the Remington 700 CDL in 7mm Rem Mag. It is a great rifle and the calibre is hard to beat. I would but it again, and again. Accuracy is dead dead dead on

A RUM is a bit of a crazy round for your first gun. Even a 7mm Rem Mag is not the best gun to learn on.

Why not get a something like a .243 or 25-06 and learn to shoot before you get a magnum round?

Also, a RUM will burn out a barrel a LOT faster than many more standard rounds.

Any gun build on a 700 action is going to serve you well.
