A perfect weekend grouse hunting

My dad and i went out grouse hunting last weekend on one of the few roads right by our house with our two dogs.The cover on the tree's is still pretty thick in place's but it's starting to get better.It was'nt very long and the dogs put up a perfect low straight away shot, I was able to take it down with one perfect shot from my new SxS 12 gauge.We worked the rest of the road and some of the small meadows off to the side but didn't find any more birds.On the way back to the truck the dogs put up one more grouse and dad was able to get it with his first shot from hs new 20 gauge O/U.It's always nice when you both get something even better when it's with a new gun.The grouse number's haven't been all that high this year but the hunting has still been great.

Hi Curt yep the other one is a cocker she's a little on the small side but has the biggest heart in the world never give's up.

Ijust moved to the kelowna area and i've been walking trails above oyama and around beaver lake recently looking for birds. but being dogless, the hunting has been pretty hard. Grouse around here sure don't roost like the ones up north.

I see you have dogs, do they automatically know to look for the grouse? Did you have to train them or is there sort of an instinct to run around and flush or chase them?

Yes, the dogs need a bit of training, but the chase is natural for them, you need to confirm to them what you are looking for. You also need to show them a bit of commands and the basis of obedience.

Some breeds are more polyvalent than others, but like with love, practice makes all the difference.

Same here

I had some of the best Saturday mornings with my dad hunting Grouse and Woodcock.....wish he was still around.
Enjoy them Grizzlyking, life gets busy and is far to short.

Y'know he's been drinking non-stop since you left. You had to do it right in the middle of hunting season too, that ain't right
