3031 and 300 grain bullet + 45-70 Marlin

I tried 50 gr 3031 and after 3 shots , I dropped to 47 grains...much less recoil and great accuracy. 5 shot Cloverleaf at 50 yards with a scope and 2" at 100..

I have used 54gr with a 300jhp and it is great. Dear just fall over.
Thanx for the info, find the 47 grain and low recoil and accuracy interesting, will also try few of the 54 grain loads 
Observed a one shoot kill on a deer, at 40 meter last weekend with a 300grain jacketed, factory bullet. The hit was in the heart/lung area, and the deer dropped on the spot.

I use 62 grs. Anything more a tad bit warm for my XLR. I Use the 350's for a hunting load, more oomph (on both ends). Hodgdon's minimum load tends to be everybody else's max for the .45-70. They take it to the 40000 psi level on the max end (NOT CUP's), safe for the Marlin, but the last 3 - 5 grs are very noticeable and could show slight signs of excess, mostly sticky extraction. The other classic "signs" don't appear generally until you're way over, and I'm not sure that's possible with this straight walled case. Only so much powder will fit - overdoing the slow burners only makes for a bigger flash as long as you stick to standard LR primers.

IMR 3031 .45-70 Marlin reloads
I was out shooting last weekend with my '70's Marlin 1895 and had some good results.... I was using 54.0 grs of IMR 3031 , Win case , Fed 210 primer , and a 300 gr JHP bullet with a Lee factory crimp on them... Shooting at a measured 100 yds , I got a three shot group of 1.35"... And that was shooting off the hood of my truck at the gravel pit... And the case expansion was low , compared to the resized brass case... I estimate the velocity at 1800 fps , judging by the data in a few reloading manuals.
I also had some older Winchester 300 gr Factory 300 JHP ammo , it surprised me as it shot great , three shots measured .95"....
Going to try out the Hornady 300 gr JHP reloads on deer this Nov , I haven't shot anythingyet with the 45-70 although I have had a long love affair with the cartridge!
I'm not an expert , but I suggest you watch your case head expansion at the "pressure ring" spot on the case , make sure your reloads do not go past the same expansion of te 300 gr JHP Factory loads - that way you won;t run into problems pressure wise....
