M14 bolt disassembly

Just curious, what's the best way people have found to disassemble this bolt WITHOUT having the 'bolt disassembly tool'...which costs more $$. I would like to do this for: practice and re-springing.

The tool that comes with your cleaning kit that the cleaning rod threads onto is a bolt dis-assembly tool.Do a search, there are instructions posted somewhere. I used to dis-assemble mine every time I took it to the range!
 
DON'T do it unless you REALLY need to. Use a chemical cleaning agent like Gun Scubber or another similar method. Most guys have a hell of a time reassembling the bolts. Do a search on this site and you'll see other threads on this.
 
yea, taking apart is no problem- putting back together you need 3 hands - there's also something about using an 06 case, but i've had /used the m14 for about 30 years, man and boy, and never had to do anything to a bolt yet- clean it sure, but that's a job for chemicals and brushes- so waht's yours doing BEFORE we get into tearing it to pieces-if it's just for curiosity, it's like cutting your hand to see if it bleeds- basically DON'T DO IT-moreover, the norcs can be real stinkers in the re-assembly dept as opposed to usgi-
however if you ABSOLUTELY MUST THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE ON THE NET
TM 9-1005 223 12 .pdf- that;s the whole freakin support manual, not what usgi is issued which is fm23-8

AGAIN WITH THE SEARCH ENGINE- type in m14 bolt disassembly- you'll get it all, including the bit on how to do it IN THE RIFLE using the 06 case
ALL THE INFORMATION IS ON THE NET, PEOPLE, YOU JUST HAVE TO USE YOUR SEARCH ENGINE- in some cases better PICTURES than what's in the manuals( for those who don't read)
i should say something about laziness at this point

Where is the "do it IN THE RIFLE using the 06 case" info? I can't find it.

"m14 bolt disassembly" didn't yield anything really usefull either.

What search engine are you using?
 
I learned to re-assemble the bolt without any tools, except the tool that comes with the gun.. The secret for me was cutting one coil off of the plunger spring.The norinco spring is too stiff, removing one coil makes all of the difference. One of my M14s had a problem and would get brass in the firing pin channel(that was fixed by replacing the firing pin), so after 40 to 50 rounds, the firing pin would jam, and the gun wouldnt fire.I would then have to strip the bolt and clean the brass filings out of the firing pin channel! Its is easy once you have done it a few times!
 
What PunkRockBoy said. The bolt is easy to disassemble, but do it in your bathroom, with the toilet lid down and the plugs in the sink and tub the first couple of times, because it's possible that a spring-or-2 could jump away from you.
I use the rifle and '06 case to put the bolt back together, really makes it simple.

The first step is to grind-off the rim for about 1/2 of the way around on a .30-'06, .270, 35 Whellen etc.
Reassemble the barreled action using the striped bolt (with the roller on it, of course) like you would the normal bolt. Then, with it muzzle-down, slip the firing pin in. Now take the gun to a nearly level position (still slightly muzzle down), pull the cocking handle to the rear, drop an '06-size case into the chamber with the ground-off rim in the 10 o'clock position. Put the ejector spring and ejector plunger into the hole and slowly slide the action closed on the case. You'll have to push the cocking handle forward to completely compress the ejector spring. Then align the extractor and snap it in. The ground-off rim just makes it go a little easier, it's not essential.

yahoo - it comes standard on hp machines-- waht you want is under appleseed info - or type in the pdf i previously metioned and you get the WHOLE TECHICAL MANUAL- the bolt dissassembly /replacement is about halfway through- just ingnore the refernces to SELECTOR INSTALLED ON RIFLE- tm-9-1005-223-12

Whoa, as others have said DON'T DO IT unless you really have to. Trust me on this. I have an ejector that is somewhere in my basement. Has it been mentioned on how bruital it is to get parts for these things. Try missing a key part and start looking. It really sucks having a $400+ paperweight. I was able to put mine back together after getting a new ejector from milarm (they were really good to me on this, very positive experience). HINT put it assemble and dissassemble in a plastic bag.
 
I got lucky..... that tiny extractor spring insert only pinged off one wall. After 40 minutes of searching on my hands and knees, I managed to recover it.

Put the bolt assy in something enclosed because I guarantee you, pieces will be flying the first time or two.

I'm in AB and have a brownel's disassembly tool. PM me if you want to arrange to borrow it.

Oh's its easy to do. I never bother with the bolt tool. Just don't do it outside or over a shaggy rug. The bathroom trick works as well. You can also use a brake cleaner spray to flush out crap and avoid taking it apart. But you might as well try it for the experience.

Same way the normal combo tool works really except that its meant to use the op-rods spring's own pressure to keep the bolt from flying back when you remove the extractor. Instead of trying to hold the bolt and combo tool together causing it to easily "explode" due to the spring pressure in the bolt.

i use the Strobel bolt tool, best one i've played with by far. I've also tried the broiwnells version and it works well. Never seen Art's tool..... I assume we are talking about Art Lapino?
