Once again, our group has lost another prime piece of deer property to some local ppl. Me and one other fellow have hunted this place for 3 years now, and when we went to set up our portable stands, someone had parked a trailer right in the middle of a nice swamp/bush that holds lots of deer. So I call this fellow and he is NOT liked by too many others in that neck of the woods. They had trailers that they parked in another bush and they were trashed last winter, (not by us!!) So he tells me today that he is hunting somewhere else and not our bush. His dogs will stay in the trailer while they are hunting, but when they get back he will let his dogs out and they love to run around. He told us that we can go in this year cuz our stand were already put up, but starting next year he has exclusive permission. Every fricken year, deer hunting puts more and more of a foul taste in my mouth. Sorry bout the rant but im beyond super pi**ed.

If it is a crown land that it is not your place. You don't have more right to hunt on it than anybody else, so you hadn't lost it, you just arrived too late. Of course he is not better than you if he said that somebody is not welcomed there.

No, its private property. These ppl have been trying to move in closer and closer every year. (among other groups) They have tried to push out other groups in our area as well. They have as well gone and got other exclusive permission from other property's and have intercepeted all our deer. Seems like we are being pushed out of our area that we have been on for the last 15 years. They seem to have the mentality that they are locals and want to hunt EVERYWHERE!

Sounds like you need to improve your relations with the landowner. While you seem to be blaming the new hunters, it's the landowner that ultimately decides who hunts and who doesn't.

What were your relations with the landowner for the past 3 years? Did you call him each fall to ask for his permission? Did you offer compensation? Did you give him a piece of meat?

These are the things that goes a looooooong way in getting exclusivity on a private property

Are you paying the owner to hunt there? ya should at least cover the owners taxes on the land for the year.
That IMHO has the final say in who can hunt the land.
Afterall the owner is still payn' the man for his own land...

Ya we take him meat, apple pies, wine etc every year. He said he hates ppl who the only time he hears from them is 3 days before deer hunting. Well, dually noted, we pop in all the time and talk to him all summer. May try the taxes thing though, or the offering to machine parts for his equipment, cuz we all know farmers break things.

I can tell you one thing (I've said it before) that ANY farmer would love to receive in return for permission to hunt
....more than meat...more than pies...more than booze....and probably more than $$$$. It's called HARD LABOUR.
Cutting wood, clearing fencelines, fixing fence. Almost guaranteed to get you in the door!!! :D :D

After seeing your trail cam pics Ill shovel some manure and fix a fence or two.

Isn't it illegal to let dogs run free/at large?

YEP! AND DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE DOGS, BUT IF I SEE ONE RUNNING AT LARGE IN THE OPEN WOODS, well I just hope it ain't chasing deer, cause I will drop it. I would first try to make contact with it see if it has tags etc ie, give it a chance by taking him to the pound, but we all know that dogs at large tend to just run deer into the ground...thats why it is illeagle to just let them run free. But sounds to me like you said when the hunter gets home to the trailer, is when he lets them out... Well technically he is still there to supervise and call them in.

So putting myself in his boots, I have no problem letting my dogs run off leash around my camp area. And if I shot my dog I would shoot me.. Get it..

What exactly makes them you're deer? if they have permission then they have every right to hunt there as you do.

Your allowing yourself to be bullied.Hang tight, and I bet they move along when they see you wont.
I would talk to the land owner for an exclusive lease arrangement for next year though.

Great advice.
The lads who hunt my place know how much it means to me to see them when I am mowing up small square bales. They have also helped sort cattle and piled firewood. Good group. :)

We had guys that got deer out of an area year after year. Coming across a field right towards them. The other group would come up to us after hearing the shots and make nice and ask how things are, oh nice deer, what area did he come from, that friendly conversation. Then each time they move in closer and now they have themselves exclusive permission (only after a couple of years of actual tresspassing) and have put themselves right in between us and the deer, and have cut them off, making those spots useless to us now. Sometimes I think thats the game they wanna play, is to get into an area that houses deer and drive out everybody whos in it, by getting under their skin.

I know its frustarating, we have all lost a good spot for some reason or another. However if these guys are local they probably have more time to court the landowner, do chores, shoot coyotes for him or pay him. Just because they are locals and getting permission to hunt the good spots does not make them bad people does it?

Instead of complaining about it here, go out see the land owner find out whats going. Maybe they don't have permission and are blowing smoke up your ass. Maybe they offered the landowner a few dollars. Whatever it is deer season is upon us. Get out and find some new spots or try and work with these guys so the whole season does not go down the tubes.

I find it amusing how many guys refer to them as "my deer". They are nobodies deer until YOU harvest it.
