Question about 45-70

.45-70vs.308.png

Yea, that's what i saw on wikipedia. That's....awsome kinda.

wow smak daddy 80 foot mid range.

my pedersoli sharps will put them all into 1.5 inches at 100 yds

with 31 of 4198 and a 350 gr cast bullet.

low recoil and fun to shoot

I have owned several 45-70's
few guide guns few custom made - heavy barrels and light bush guns built on ruger #1 actons and I will always have one in the safe
Currently have a shiloah sharps in 45-70
now have a custom 50 alskan and now have two guns to choose form that our fun to shoot and hit hard

In other words you can't just put the crosshairs on and only have to worry about trigger control........ You acctually have to know how to shoot.

And that's the problem with most of the crop of new or current rifle shooters . They all seem to want a rifle that loud, fast and flat shooting. Everyone wants a rifle with a huge scope that can go to the range a couple times and then want to shoot long distance so they can boast to their buddies that they shot their Moose/Caribou/Elk at a long distance. Instead of taking the time to use a calibre that won't kick their butts after 2 or 3 rounds and take the time to learn to HUNT their prey and stalk it to a reasonable distance for the rifle they are used to carrying .

With the new lever evolution 45-70 ammo i used.. with 100Yards 2 Inches high I'm landing bulls eyes at 200yards .. the left and right is non existent these bullets seem to shoot very well .

my 405grain hand loaded bullets are landing similar drop rates aswell . 200 yards is not a hard shot with a 45-70.. as the drop is nothing more than aim at the animals back at ranges of 150-200yards. going to 300yards though i have yet to see the actual drop rate and I'm expecting alot more drop.. i'm actually expecting like 15 inches or more tbh.

the good thing here is my left and right movement seems to be low or not at all .. so in my thinking going with a fixed power mill dot setup and finding where the mill dots line up would help with longer range shooting. cuz lets be honest if you hit anything with a 405G flat nose they are taking a dirt nap you just need to know where that bullets going to land.

These are not flat shooting Rifles.

Unfortunately I only had the chance to shoot my new 45/70 at 50yrs with the LeverEvolution ammo. Its sighted in at bull at 50yrds since majority of my bush shots are 50yrs and under, but I was hoping to have the chance to see what it does at 100yrds when zeroed at 50yrds.

I guess I will have to pop a couple shots off at a 100yrd target during the week of deer hunting at my buddies farm to see where it hits.

i have shot 2000 '/sec 400 gr. bullets in my ruger no.1 ....

it is not fun.

Hornaday says it's close to a 458Win when loaded up in a Ruger No.1

Anyone tried pyrodex pellets re the 1873 load of 1250 fps with a 405 gr lead bullet.
Thought it might be fun in my Springfield...1895 Marlin still working on a pet load.

I don't see the point of pyrodex loads, cleaning is a job and same velocity

can be obained easily with smokeless.

brass is compromised as corrosion is instant.

I agree, but some cowboy loads often require Black powder or Pyrodex...

Bought Lyman BP LOAD book lots of data re 45-70 was curious if anyone tried the pellets.

Whoa, what?! Drops 11 inches? Gross! :yingyang: Buuuut, I'll prob still go buy a marlin this weekend anyways. You own? You like?

THX guys!

An 11 inch drop at 200 yards is usual for the big bullets. Holding on the backbone of a moose at that distance will drop it with one shot. It's about the same as hitting a moose at 70 mph with a Volkswagen:D
The 45-70 bullet looks like and probably has the same frontal mass as a VW bug.........

IMO there's a difference between hunter's and killer's ANYBODY can pile out of a truck on the backroad and plow bambi @ 100yds with a rifle that has a point blank range of 200+ yards. they can also tell their buddies that it was "at least 300" and sound like a hero. That does not make you a hunter.

Now in saying that almost everyone who has hunted for more than five minutes has had that oppurtunity and taken it myself included but that's just killing a deer you didn't actually hunt it. IT happened to be where you were driving. Such is life

I feel that hunting is a different thing a prime example for this is how I bow hunt glassing scouting and glassing on and on patterning animals cause if your 50 yds outa position gameover...... true hunters have taken the time to gather knowledge of the animals they hunt where they live what they eat where they sleep and when you do all of this not only will you feel a greater sense of accomplishment....................................

But you will find that good old 45/70 has plenty of range when you can here the critter breathing:D
