Hello,

I have a couple problem that I'm sure are not to big of an issue but have me wondering.

1. When a round is in the chamber and I pull the trigger the firing pin hits the primer but does not ignite the charge. This happens about once every two to 3 shots. Could it be bad ammo? I also thought it could be a dirty firing pin, so I took that apart to clean and yes it was DIRTY, but that's all clean now and it still does that.

2. Every once and a while a cartridge will get jammed in the action (stove piping... I think its called) Could this be the spring in the magazine?

Thanks for you help it is appreciated.

1. Failure to fire: Is the bolt all the way forward?. Make sure the chamber is well scrubbed and clean. If yes, then the issue could either be defective ammunition (old surplus with NS primers), or the firing pin channel is greasy, dirty or corroded. Since you've disassembled the bolt and given it a good cleaning, try a different lot of ammunition.

2. Stove piping is when an empty casing fails to clear the action upon ejection, and blocks the forward motion of the bolt reloading a fresh cartridge. So, is it this issue? Then it is insufficient gas to the piston. Clean the gas tube, piston and gas block (including the small hole that leads to the barrel).

Using old surplus ammunition makes for cheap shooting, but it's usually corrosive. Do a thorough cleaning of the barrel, gas system and bolt after each range session. Lightly oil, then re clean the rifle again a day or two later. Make sure you wipe dry all the above before shooting.

If you check e-bay, etc, the correct operator's manual for the SKS can be bought at reasonable prices. It will show all you need to know, including stripping, operation, maintenance, IA's, etc.

everytime i buy a rifle , i do a thorough cleaning . dismantle and clean the bolt , firing pin should rattle free.. clean and inspect the chamber and gas tube .

1. Try taking the extractor off and giving her a good cleaning, may be some junk stuck in there.

2. Try factory ammo

Had similar issues with an old SKS which were solved by cleaning the extractor and finding a small piece of metal jammed in there.

Ok, the ammo is good ammo, factory non-corrosive right from noric.

Stove piping is when an empty casing fails to clear the action upon ejection, and blocks the forward motion of the bolt reloading a fresh cartridge. So, is it this issue?
my issue is that the spent casing is ejected no problem and the fresh cartridge being loaded gets a touch sideways and stuck in the forward motion of the bolt. Which is making me think that maybe the spring in the magazine is not as strong as it used to be in popping up the cartridge.

When I cleaned the bolt itself I tried my best to get in where the firing pin sits, but did not actually get anything in that small hole to clean it. What does everyone else use? The pin still floats freely, would a dry lube like the one that Remington has be good for that bolt?

Thanks very much,

I had a few D types do slam fires as well, never had it with non D types Ive owned or shot.

The weird thing about the firing pin is that about a week earlier I had shot off 10 rounds with no problems, the feeding issue still happened. Is there a way to get a replacement spring for the magazine? Or some how to make it stronger?

The thing with the D is that the mag isn't in the best position and the rounds sit a bit too low, imho. I fixed that problem by removing some material from the underside of the feed lips of a magazine so the rounds sit a little higher and the bolt can catch them then feed properly. I highly doubt a loose spring is your issue.
