I've always wanted to shoot my Mosin Nagant with good ammo and I finally did it today. Previously, shooting Bell/Igman 150grn and surplus 'heavy ball' 180grn ammo my accuracy was a shotgun patten at 100 yards. Every now and again I'd get lucky and get a good 5" group of 5-10 rounds but it was nothing to brag about. Reloaded Bell cases were a little better but the brass was so tough I couldn't FL resize it and it only lasted about 5 neck sizings before it was discarded.

I suspected the culprit was poor ammo so I took the plunge and ordered some Lapua 7.62x53r brass from Hirsch Precision, $95 total, and used 50 grains of H335 under Sierra 125 grn .311 SPs seated to 2.743 (2.715 minimum). Rifle is a 1939 dated 1891/30 refurb from SIR, import marked and with a refinished BLO stock but the bolt matches the receiver. The bore is sharp but patches never come out clean no matter what I try.

I fired 30 rounds at the last target (posted below) at 100 yards. All the rounds were fired within a few minutes, 10 rapid fire (in about a minute) at a time with a minute or two in between. At the end there was a noticeable heat induced 'haze' around my muzzle. I was using a fairly solid rest made from some 2x4s and spare carpet but sacrificing precision for speed. I'm confident that had I taken my time and used a good rest I could shot a target with a nice 5 shot group within an inch or two. Frankly, my Mosin will never be in 'precision rifle' category and hell will freeze over before I join their ranks and shoot 5 rounds in 10 minutes all for a 1" group and some internet bragging rights. I just wanted to see how the rifle would perform with decent ammo, a tiny bit of effort, and at a relatively rapid speed that the rifle might have been expected to perform at.

Nice. That's definitely 30 very dead moose. (Or perhaps more dangerous, European game, for which the rifle was intended?)

Forgot to mention, the 30 rounds were fired after 17 preliminary rounds were fired in 10 and 7 shot groups that gave me enough confidence to try all 30 on one target. The rifle was rather warm when I started.

To add to this, here's a target as fired from my noticeably inferior K98 and corrected by hand for improper windage setting. Same drill as with the Mosin, 30 rounds of 125grn Sierra .323s over 47 grns of H335 and seated to 2.900 (note to self, K98 is loud with a decent kick for a light load!), though the brass was on its third FL size.

Nice shooting. I can't shoot with open sights any more. eyes won't focus on the front sight.

I am pleased to see you got good results with the 123 bullet. I have a bunch of them.

I just bought the same Lapua brass and some 150 gr bullets. have not yet tried them. Would be delighted if they work as well as your results.

What kind of Mosin are you shooting happydude?

Open sights, right? Good shooting if so..

It's a $145 Izhevsk marked 1891/30, built in 1939 and refurbed post war (box with a [/] through it on the stock), import marked and given a new serial number by Century. Bolt and receiver match, mag floor plate does not. Bore is good but for the life of me I cannot get it clean so I'd call it dark. I shot the target with open sights and that rifle will never see a scope.

My only mistake was using Easy Off to strip the shellac and then putting on a polyurethane finish. Right now it's got a BLO finish but some of the poly is still in the wood but I can't bring myself to sand it any more. For some reason the combo of poly stain and BLO gives it a good natural look that isn't too slippery but doesn't smell or leak BLO.

After my previous shooting attempts I wrote it off as inaccurate Russian junk. I considering ridding myself of it but it was my first firearm so I kept it around for sentimental value. I've been using it as my bush rifle so it's been caked in mud, swimming, frozen, dropped, and repeatedly beaten with a 2x4 to open the bolt after shooting heavy ball on a hot day. The leather dog collars broke so the sling in held on by a couple of zip ties. I'm thinking that might change now.

Try 56 grns of BLC 2 with a 125 grn bullet. I will use nothing else in My M-44. Pulled 7.62x39 or Hornady work equally well.

This was done early in the summer. 75 and 150 yard shots with irons. I was using cheap Hungarian heavy ball ammo.
