Hello all, anyone have a Pelican rifle case? Are they worth the extra money if you are planning on flying anywhere? Debating if I should buy one, or go with the $200 price range gun case. Any opinions either way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
I love my pelican case. $260 at the pelican case store. My wife made me buy it because she has pelican cases for her camera gear. It is cheap insurance. You could get a soft case, and the first time you drop it, your scope could be f'd. You could throw the pelican case down the stairs, into a pool, and everything inside will be fine. How much did you spend on your rig? Doesn't it seem like a smart investment?
 
If you've ever seen baggage handlers and customs handle your gear, you really shouldn't think twice about it when flying. I have the Pelican 1750 which stores 2 firearms.
 
I have flown all over the world with rifle teams. A common rifle problem is a broken stock because luggage got stacked on the case and flexed it. If you travel with a cheap case, pack a big tube of epoxy. You might need it.

Or, if with a cheap case, take rifle out of stock and pack the two side by side. This reduces torque on the stock and the barreled action stiffens things up.

When I was Captain of the Palma team, I arranged a Pelican for each team member so we would not have any broken rifles. It worked, except for the case that got stolen.

I think your decision is really a "no brainer". If you were looking for support to spend the extra bucks, you got it.

I use Pelican cases for my field tool boxes - awesome. I once stood in the airport terminal in Cambridge Bay and watched a baggage handler drop one of my cold soaked boxes from a Hawker Siddely 748 straight to the ground at -35C, I'm guessing a 6' - 7' drop and the box survived. Every nonmetal thing inside didn't but at least I could carry it away in one piece. They're worth every penny.
 
Have you considered a Starlight case?

I bought a 52" one and a 38" one, and both cost right around $220 to my door.

The 52" can hold one large scoped rifle and two full length shotguns at the same time. I use my 38" one to carry my Citori and 10/22 together. I would not hestiate to take these on a plane.

They're very tough - do a search for their website. Starlight.
