Im looking for some advise around choosing a glock. From glock 17 to Glock 39 there are slew of choices.

What is a good model to start with and why. I am looking to use it for target practice in probably a 9mm or 40. restricted or prohib.

How have you board members found the reliabiltiy, any problems, wear or other things of note. Is there a particular model that is known for being good or bad?

I've heard the jokes about the best thing to do is remove the name tag, discard the rest of the firearm and put glue the tag to something else...haha.
Now Im lookin for some experience please and thank you.

The G17 was the first Glock and the one that every other Glock model is based on. Your collection is not complete without a 17 (9mm).

Unless you are grandfathered, forget the prohibited.

Cost wise your best bang for the buck will be a model 17. 9mm ammo is the cheapest and readily available.

Easy to use and maintain, however, not everyone is a fan of the trigger and lighter weight. Once you get used to the trigger, it is easy to work with from my experience (owned a G22 and G35).

In addition to the comments above... even if you have 12.6 status, you can pretty much forget the prohib GLOCK altogether, regardless of what you have on your PAL. There are lots of 12.6 guys on this board looking to buy up the few 19's, 26's, 23's and other prohib GLOCKs that there are with their original barrels. They are hard to come by to say the least.

I used to own a 17. It was fine. Not really my thing, but nothing wrong with it. I have shot various of the other models. I'm basically a SIG and HK guy now, but if I were going to get a GLOCK now, I'd definitely get the 19 from Questar. I have shot a few of them. A couple of my friends have them... and swear by them. This is me shooting one:

This one has griptape on the grip, but it gives you an idea of what the G19 with Storm Lake stainless barrel looks like. This is my GF shooting that same gun:

If you have really big hands, then the 19 may not be your thing... as there isn't a lot of extra room on the grip. But if you have "normal" sized hands for a man, then I think the 19 is the way to go. It feels more controllable to me (than the larger models), and I can shoot it better than the other models I've tried (which may be at least partly due to the barrel... which is fitting tighter).

GLOCK is ultra reliable... and they have this unique quality whereby they don't really seem to wear no matter how much you shoot them. You could break a small part here and there (firing pin, maybe a trigger part) after a buzzillion rounds. They keep on ticking forever. Now... whether they are any more reliable and durable than their competitors... that is a debate that will rage forever. But the GLOCKS do appear to have less visual wear than basically anything on the market... which is a big part of their appeal for people.

In terms of models... no, they are basically all the same design. The differences are just in size and calibre.

Now, having said all that.. for myself I prefer to shoot SIGs and HKs, because I think that I can shot them more accurately, fast or slow. But... the GLOCK didn't conquer the autopistol market by being a shoddy product. It has a hell of a lot going for it.

Its butt ugly, but aside from that is is a superior firearm :D in terms of function and reliability. Some people do not like the grip angle but others prefer it. Its a personal choice based on user preference.

Cheers :)

Ive had 3 different Glocks now 17 22c and my newest one shown below Glock 22OD green, when I reload and end up with ammo that my expensive fussy guns wont shoot the Glock will fire every time without jamming.

as everyone says, buy a glock 17 and give it a try.... I am a glockaholic and own the G17L, G34, G17, G26 and a G21 right now.... going to buy a G19 to complete the 9mm series when I can afford it :)

then I will work on the .45's and 10mm's.

No Glock 9mm collection is complete without the elusive G18 and "G-7". You know, the all ceramic one.

Good luck! :)

I have a G17 and I love it. It was my first auto after firing revolvers, so it took me a while to adjust to it. I am looking to get a .357, a .40 and a .45 to complete my collection. I'd be interested to see what your thoughts are after you get it. Enjoy

I love Glocks. I've got a G17, G20C, and a new G29 that just arrived in the mail today. I find them super easy to use, super easy to strip, and super easy to modify. Also, and this may sound strange, I think Glocks are good looking.

I would start with the 17. Mine is a workhorse and has fed even crappy reloads. Still waiting for my first FTF. Feels like I will be waiting a long time. :D

I just got worried about elections , wandering what if if liberals win ?
So i went to reliable and bought Glock 17 .
It's good gun .

The sights are Tru-glo TFO's (tritium fiber optic). Awesome sights. They are very bright in daylight and they also glow in the dark. I got them from glockparts.com. The barrel I polished myself.

I purchased my first sidearm this year & it is a G17 in 9mm OD green. I really like it and I am getting used to it, it's fun for metal targets at the range.

My first Glock was a G19 9mm then I stupidly sold it not knowing that I would lose my grandfather rights to prohib guns.

My next Glock was a G20 10mm with a spare 40S&W barrel and an Advantage Arms 22LR conversion kit, then a G23 40S&W and my now favorite Glock a G29 10mm that also has a spare 40S&W barrel.

For a first Glock I would go with the G17 9mm or the G22 40S&W.

You can get the G19 with extended barrel, I believe Questar still has them, I like the G19 over the G17, sort of like the differance between the Government and the Commander 1911's

Note that you can not shoot cast bullets out of a standard Glock barrel.

Lets see, I own a G17, 19, 21, 23, 27, and 30. Think that is the end of it? No, I have a 3 1/2# trigger in the G17, a 10mm KKM barrel for my G20, Bar-Sto 9mm, 40 S&W , 357 Sig barrels for my G23, 9mm & 357 Sig barrels for my G27. Lastly, I would like a 10mm KKM barrel for my G30. If I had to pick only one to keep it would be my G23 with extra barrels as it can do just about anything. Regards, Richard:)
