Well day two was also a bust. I started the day off crawling on my belly to get over a hill to keep out of sight of a deer I spotted a glimpse of walking on a trail. I got past it then in front of it, hustled over another hill and was waiting for it to catch up. When I figured it was below me, I started to the edge and ended up about 75 yards away from it, and it was now facing away from me. But it was a buck, and I only have doe tags. After a few seconds it turned and looked at me while I said "bang!"

I then wen't back into the coulee's and started in. After a while I jumped another buck and then a doe. They didn't seem too alarmed, so I hit the ground and watched as they casually went over the top. I wen't after them and followed their trail as it wen't into the next coulee, and around the bend. I had the rifle ready as I aproached the edge, but they weren't there. I kept on them, and finally found them over the ridge and in the field with no way for me to get closer. I sat and watched them for awhile, then just for fun I started to blow on my deer talk call. They didn't like that and finished vacating the county. However a pair of coyote's took an interest in my calling and quickly made straight for me. One of them looked like he was going to run over me so I whistled and threw my hand up at him. He stopped, and spun around and went back a ways, while the other just watched. Then I started making kiss sounds and it damn near drove them bonkers.
I took a video of the second dog who was down right ticked off with me for playing such a cruel joke on them. :D It stayed with me for a ways, and just sat to watch me for quite awhile. I didn't shoot them because the land owner told me in the Spring he likes having them around to keep the gophers in check. I also managed to get a few shots of a hawk who had a more succesful day than I. He was busy making lunch of a mouse. I tried shooting my camara through my binoculars for a kind of telephoto lens, just to see what would happen. Anyways, that was my day. I'm done now until maybe Saturday Evening, and then next Saturday. Good luck everyone and stay safe.

One dissapointed songdog.

Great day if you ask me.....!! Much more enjoyable than sitting here at the office just reading about everyone else's adventures, wishing I were part of an adventure myself!!
Thanks for sharing the photos!

I've had incredible luck calling mule deer does in with a cow elk call. Rather than the short cow chirps, I make it sound more like a fawn in distress and I've had many does literally coming running right in from as far away as 500 yards. It may be worth a try and it sure is a lot of fun!

I agree with Sheephunter. Mule deer does and Whitetails to a lesser degree, can respond really well to fawn in distress calls.
Many, many times I’ve had mule deer does literally come running when I have been using fawn sounds to call coyotes.

Another to add to the evidence of sheephunter and Norton. I've had mulie does charge in from hundreds of yards away to the sound of a predator call. Fawn distress, snowshoe hare distress and jack rabbit will all bring them on the run.

Damn, it took almost a half hour to get the right video to load! Sorry about that.

The deer talk/deer stopper sort of is a fawn is distress if you blow hard enough. :D

I'll give my jackrabbit in distress a try on the next go round, thanks.

Well I was gonna go back to work tommorow, but the Wife talked me into taking another day to go hunting! God I love that woman. :D

I think I'll take the predator call and give it a go. That is unless I manage to get the jump on them first. ;)

Whens the season end there?

How come I never have any deer running in when I'm whaling on the distressed rabbit call, when out coyote hunting?

Should I try it tomorrow for my last day of shotgun for deer?

I've found that you need to make a much different sound. I've experimented with a ton of calls and the cow elk seems to work best for me. It's a bit of a crying sound but not nearly as intense as a predator call.

Whitetails seem to run away from it. You need the other flavor of deer in your area.

Actually tried it on some whitetails tonight and while they lifted their head to look in my direction at first, they contently went back to eating even though I was only 150 yards away. They really didn't seem that interested or concerned.
