need a slug gun--opinions

Hey all

Looking for a sluggun, here's what I want:

-10 or 12 ga
-preferably autoloader
-pistol grip rear
-vertical/pistol grip forearm
-accurate out to 200yards

can anyone recommend a manufacturer that would sell this setup? And NO remington suggestions please :)

Check out the Benelli guns, you will find just what you are looking for. Ellwood Epps has some in stock. Mind you, you won't get the vertical pistol grip on the front, and good luck shooting out to 200 yards accruate with a slug gun! I missed that part.

10 or 12 g slugs, accurate out to 200yds, fired out of a pistol gripped front and rear stock?

Sounds like minute-of-mountain material, but I'm willing to keep an open mind..... what are you going to shoot at?
 
No offence, but there are some hurdles to overcome, such as:

Edit: Accurate to 200 yards. With whom behind the trigger, and what optics? In reality, few shotguns are truly capable of this distance accuracy-wise.

Rifled barrel or smoothbore, not stated.

In 10 gauge, your only slug option is Federal. So it's kind of really hard to find in most stores.

Actually a full stock, with a rear pistol grip, would help absorb recoil. But the forward grip....well, is just weird IMHO.

Not withstanding all these factors, if you can get one in Canada, an Ithaca Deerslayer III.

If you insist upon a 10 gauge, the only deer slaying autoloader I can think of, comes in the SP-10. From your forbidden "R" company.

The older 10 bore, Ithaca semi-automatic, is no longer in production.

get a 12 gauge for starters.

Isn't Remington making a weird looking 11-87 with cantilever rifled barrel, and pistol grip type stock?
 
ok thanks for the replies! guess I'm not going the shotgun route if i can't hit 200yards offhand...it would be a rifled barrel btw :( I don't really get why the forward vertical stock would be "weird" though, please explain :)

You mention you want a gun to shoot out to 200 yards, and mention you want one with a vertical grip on the fore stock, can you tell us what you plan on doing with this gun? If you want a "tactical" type of shotgun, then you won't be shooting out to 200 yards. If you are looking for a "hunting" shotgun, then you really don't need the vertical fore stock. If you are looking at hunting out to 200 yards, then try getting a rifle in 30 cal, and a good scope. Most hunting shotguns shoot at game in the ranges of 20-100 yards. If you don't plan on hunting, and just want a gun to target shoot at 200, then I would suggest a heavy barrel rifle. If you could tell us what you plan on using the gun for, we could give you better options. Cheers
 
We had our deer season here last week and I was hunting in a new (great) area. Conditions were tight shooting and the game was moving fast the whole week. I never even had a chance to fire my browning a-bolt 30-06...it carries a leupold vx3-3.5-10x40, even at 3.5 it was too much, and with the long barrel I kept whacking branches!

So anyways, looks like I'm in the market for a lightweight, short length, fiberoptic sighted or low powered something...something where I can acquire the moving target quickly and easily in dense bush.

So that's where I thought a slug gun would come in handy. My wrists were sore holding my rifle all week and I thought a pistolgrip would be more ergonomic/comfortable.

I also like a large drop at comb, 2-2.5" is very comfortable for me, and I notice pistol grips seem to have large drops like this. Long shots would be few and far between, but I'd still like to be able to at least take a shot at a whitetail 200yards distant...moose and bear would be inside 100yards, and I'm sure 99% of the shooting will happen in the 15-50yard range, tight and fast. My cuz has a savage bolt 12ga rifled and he can hit 200yards no probs, I just don't want a bolt :)

How much are you willing to spend to get a shotgun to do the job of a woods type rifle?

Wow, I am releived! For a while there I thought that this was going to be some weird long ranged zombie thread. For short range, the slug gun would be a good choice. For the 200 yard shot, your 06 would be a good bet. "To at least take a shot" ?? If you are carrying your sluggie, that would just be
a bad decision unless you have the gun and skill your cuz has. Come to think about it, to at least take a shot is never a good decision. I think the shot should only be taken with the reasonable certainty of a clean kill.

and when i mean take a shot at it, yes it would be clean :) i should have written it differently, i meant the gun needs the ability to take down deer at 200 yards.

anyway yes, looks like a woods rifle would be better suited for me. I was looking at a blaser r93 offroad tracking, and that tikka battue is nice as well. what other short-barrelled options are out there for me? thanks

Other rifle options I can personally think of:

Ruger Frontier Rifle, 16.5 inch barrel
Remington Model 7, 18.5 & 20 inch
Older Remington 600/660, 18.5 & 20 inch barrels(definitely out of production)
Older Savage Scout Rifle (I think it's out of production?)

I can certainly speak for the Ruger Frontier..my 358 took a nice mulie last year @ 200+ yds., and I was skeptical of its reachability with the stubby barrel.
 
.44 Ruger Carbine! I have mine outfitted with a Williams peep sight rear, and a fibre optic front post. It weighs roughly 6 1/4 pounds unloaded. Nice light rifle to carry in the woods you describe. With the new Hornady LeverEvolution bullets, 200 might be possible, just haven't checked that theory out yet. With the Xtp's I use now, I am quite comfortable out to 125, but the close quarter, thick deer woods is where this Carbine shines:D

Biggest problem would be trying to find one.
