Making the restricted jump

Hello Alberta Gunnutz!

Until now I have only owned non-restricted, but I want to buy a handgun now. I already have my RPAL, but I am not a member of a gun club yet. I thought a while ago you could just use a membership to AFGA (Alberta Fish and Game Association) for this requirement to acquire a restricted, can you still do that?

The reason I ask is that the gun club that I want to buy a membership for would require me to pay the full year price and it would expire in December of this year so I would only get maybe a month and a half of use then I would have to purchase another membership. :(

That seems like a ripe off to me, but then the membership fees are only
$50.oo/ year for the local indoor range -so this has not been a problem.

as i see it. you have a couple of solutions- go ahead and write, and by the time you get your rpal back it'll probably be january=figure in christmas and holidays- you only need your range membership for the att, or so i'm told- they just need a FIRM ADDRESS of a recognised range as to where you're taking the gun- get a hold of the executive of your prospective range and ask them if they will accept a 'MEMBERSHIP PENDING" FOR JANUARY- your membership in afga won't fly-chnces are they'll post date to january 1 as you won't be using the range without an att anyway, and you won't get a gun without a membership and an att, etc-

He already has his RPAL.

Where in Alberta are you? Most clubs have a cheaper rate late in the year. If you are in/near Calgary you can get an associate membership at TSE for I believe $40.

I am in Fort McMurray. I thought it was odd that they wouldn't pro-rate it as well, cause that seemed the most logical thing to do. A years membership is $220.
 
if you have or want restricteds, it;s the ONLY WAY you're going to an att( authorization to transport) - you're not allowed to fire restricteds on your own property, so you have to go to a LEGITAMITE range- not somebody's field- without that att, it's a safe queen
 
A few years ago (more like a few decades ago) the various CFO decided that "protection of life" was no longer a valid reason to own a handgun... even though the option is still on the form, I don't know of anybody who was able to get a transfer authorize using it...
 
Update: I ended up finding a membership for a range that was $35. Then I ordered my pistol from Wolverine - got a Springfield Armoury 1911 Loaded (Parkerized with wood grips) :D
