I wanted to take it up, any advice? I will have to take the course and get the licence first. Any advice on general stuff? Thanks for any help on this. I dont know anybody who hunts other than my 1 buddy who has only done it for a year and took several several shots to bag a goose.

Move to BC and hook up with Gatehouse. Hell, move to BC and you'll be happier, period.

Failing that, try to find a CGNer to show you the ropes. Doesn't Bigred live out there?

The only thing I have that would be suitable is a 12 Guage/ Cylinder bore and a 6mm Remington 700, all the other stuff is restricted or just target stuff.

Start with birds/rabbits/squirrels. They are great training for the bigger animals and don't require a large expenditure of money on gear. The shotty should do.

Waterfowl require a lot of gear normally (decoys, boats, dogs, blinds -- #### my wife better not see the Visa this month) and are best hunted for the first time with someone who has the stuff and knows the ropes (you ever get to AB, I'm looking for "lifters and luggers").

Small game is plentiful and can be found on public land in relative abundance. If forced to go it alone, start there and move up.

yeah my friend has a 100 acre farm, so I thought I would start there- I think I can only use the 12 g. but ill have to check.

Im alittle hesitant about bigger stuff because Im not to sure how to clean it and I would want to waste any of it. I take it the hunters ed course wont really teach much more than how to not shoot yourself and some basic rules and regs?

I can group about 2-3 inches with 6mm at 200, the shotgun patterns ok with the right load.

I use to fish alot but alot of stuff is fished out in my area now and I dont have a boat. I thought I would take up hunting as a chance to get out more and do more stuff in the woods as I use to like camping abit.

Any good links or books to check out for basic stuff that is recommended?

Appreciate the help.:D

One of the first things you should do is acquire a pamphlet that contains the, seasons, hunting areas, license fees, and general regulations listed. The regulations are quite different from province to province, and from what I've seen on CGN, Ontario's are more of a quagmire than most.

are you near the niagara area??????

pm me

Yeah Hamilton area, first things first though I have to go out and find whos running the Hunting course. I think I might have left it to late for this year, but itll give me time to going on it for next year. :D

Prepare to be spending lots of $$ over the years as you build up your equipment ;)

yeah I have alot of handguns and restricted stuff, but lately going to the range seems sort of boring, I havent shot IPSC this year either. Hunting seems like a good way to get back into it, plus I get something to eat as well.

Check with Al Simmons, they should have a list.
If you need someone to go over the hunting stuff before you write the exam give me a shout. I pretty much have one of every type of rifle/shot gun used on the exam

is it just a practical gun handling part of the exam? whats on the exam? I know some of the rules and regs/ not alot but some, but dont know much about harvesting game other than small stuff.

The courses around here run year round. They fill up quick though, usually 5-6 weeks before. Take the course, then take cdngunner up on his offer. Hands-on experience is the best kind.

Make sure when you sign up for the course, that you tell them you only want the hunting portion, not the PAL. That cuts out half the cost and half the time.
