I am debating between a Mossy 500 Persuader and a Rem 870 Mariner. Many reviews claim that for half the price a Persuader is the best buy because the 870 mariner is not two times better than the 500. Is that a fair claim? If so, should I still be concerned with the reliability of the plastic trigger guard and safety button and also the aluminium receiver of the 500? On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate both of those guns? I appreciate the help.

I have both, and I like them both for what they are.
You can accesserize the hell out of both of them.

Do you need resistance from Salt?
Are you more of a high pressure salesman?

Of course that might not be the answer you seek.

I've done some high volume shooting with my Mossberg 500 with not one problem. The plastic trigger guard is not an issue and the safety is in a superior position compared to the Remington.

I prefer the shell elevator on the Mossberg too. It stays up when the actions forward making it easier to load.

Uhh.... Isn't the trigger guard on the marine magnum plastic as well?

I have both a 500 and a couple of 870's and I think that I like the ergonomics on the 500 a little better. The safety can be replaced with a metal one, and so can the trigger guard, although I admit I don't know where to get one.

My 500 is a police trade in, looks like it took a hell of a beating over its career, but the aluminum, while scarred, is fine, the plastic safety is still intact, in fact the trigger guard probably has the least amount damage to it.

So try to play with both, and see which you prefer.

Mossberg safety is superior if you use standard buttstock for both left and right hand users.

If you go to pistol grip buttstock the location on the Remington is better for right handed people. You can get an aftermarket Rem safety for left hand shooters.

Extended safeties (aftermarket) that allow you to take the safety off as you reach for the trigger largely offsets the advantage of the Mossberg's tang safety.

Try them both and pick the one that feels the best to you.

Plastic trigger guard on my 590, it has never been a problem and the gun has taken some hard knocks in a difficult environment. It gets babied at home but not in the field. No need to be concerned about the plastic trigger guard.

Is the main difference between the Mossy 500 Persuader and the Mossy 500Mariner the corrosion-resistance plating? Other than that is it basically the same gun?

the 590 is a much better gun than the 500 if you have a few extra bucks to spend.

How do you figure that? The only difference between a 590 and 500 is that the 590 uses more of Remington style magazine tube, i.e. the spring and follower can be removed by removing the magazine cap. Convenient, more user friendly? Yes, but does that make it a "much better gun"? Hardly.

ETA: I do believe that the 590's with ghost ring sights are one of the best bargains out there though, and if you go for the 590A1 it comes with the metal trigger guard and beefier barrel.

Hi,
Just to clarify.

From Mossberg 2008 gun annual

''Mossberg developped the 590 primarlily for law enforcement and potential military markets. Very similar to the 500, the 590 shares the same receiver and virtually all other features. The primarily differences from the 500 is the configuration of the 590 magazine tube. ''The parkerized metal finish mates perfectly with other military small arms.''

There is also the heavy walled barrel.

Not so ''much better'' gun for 3x the price of a 500. ;)

trigger

I bought a metal military trigger guard and internals for my custom breacher mossy that currently for sale in the ee

The Mossberg 500/590 platform is excellent, same class as an 870. You can order a NIB factory Mossberg 590 metal trigger group from BROWNELLS.com for $79.00 USD.

My Mossberg M590-A1 with 14" barrel is built like a tank, and will beat the sh*t out of an 870 express. My Rem 870 Marine Magnum has a polymere/plastic trigger group...which I highly doubt will ever give me any problems.

Trigger group? You mean that it includes the entire trigger mech? Is it possible to just get the guard itself and put in your own internals?

14" 590-A1, I'm jealous, still kicking myself for not picking one of these up when they were easily available, think they were only around $400 or so at the time. Did you get the one with the ghost ring sights?

Yes, the ENTIRE 590 metal trigger assemble. Ya, about the 14" 590....I walked into Al Simmons for an ammo run and there it was, immediately knowing the desire and demand of these bad-boys, I scooped it up for $599.00. Used in excellent/mint condition, rollmarked M590-A1, such a beautiful piece of equipement. I can easily sell it for $1,300.00 - $1,500.00, but probally will not let it go, besides it's in my brothers possesion for his B-DAY...keep'n it in the familia :)
