I always wondered why buckshot is that much more expensive than say... 7 1/2 shot. Just looking at material used, there's more lead (smaller pellets are better at occupying the volume of the shell) than in say... 00. So why the price difference?

My guess would be due to the quantity of shells they can sell per "setup" of their production lines.
Setup costs (shutting down existing line, retooling workcells, changing out boxes, lot numbering, extra tooling for buffering material, storage of tooling, and raw material, etc..) are fixed costs that are incurred regardless of if you make one or a million. Prices are calculated accordingly. There are a lot more 7-1/2 shells being produced for hunting/clays/skeet/trap then 00 (Police, hunting, zombie testing, etc..).

We do hundreds of rounds at a time of practice or fun shoots with 7 1/2 shot wall-mart special ammo and I have no doubt that I will react the same with OO in my gun when the time arises.

I love those 300 round 12 Gauge days.
