I have a Moultrie I40. Unless you have it in good sunlight, I do not recommend it. It has a tough time to decide when it is day or night when you have it in a shady area. Mine only gave color pics when it was very sunny or when there was snow on the ground. When it did go color, the pics were excellent, and the battery life a Very good.

The I-40 and I-50 are the only way to go. My brother and his buddy have LOTS of cameras: Bushnell, older moultries, stealth cams, and cuddy back. Battery life is everything the early moultries, and bushnells need to replace batteries every 1.5 weeks(pics or not). My brothers one I-40 has over 2000 pics on it and he hasnt changed the batteries yet. I was attracted to some models cause they are cheap, and lots of cameras "go missing" around here so I bought a couple older ones from him, but batteries add up fast. I dont care if my pics are colour or B&W as long as they are clear. There are a bunch of fancy cameras out there but losing a $400 camera sucks, these are a nice middle of the road camera. My $0.02
 
I use a stealthcam 450. The pictures are great and clear day and night but the battery life is horrible. not sure how long it lasts with the rechargable 12 volt battery but I'm gonna find out soon because the cost of the batteries are adding up fast.

Agreed, battery life is essential, which is why I will not be changing my camera. I also can live with the black and white. I just hated paying $200 for a camera that is pretty well only black and white, yet advertised as color. My camera has over 1000 pics on it and the batteries are still at 78%. If you try to save $$$$ by buying a flash model, you will spend more cash on batteries. IR cameras use less energy.
 
Moultie outfitter 5.0mg ( same as d40) have done me well. I got lots of day and night time pictures that are really clear. Only problem is sometimes it takes night photos and the flash doesnt go off so they are just blank pictures. I have it on 3 round burst so I might get 2 blank pictures then one good one so I atleast know what it was taking a picture of. I got lots of buck pics to show if anyone wants to see the quality it takes. Cameras are $129.99 each.

edit: battery life is pretty good on these. I leave one camera up north at my bear sight and I have 345 pictures in 29 days and battery life was 55% when I got there. Good enough for me since I was refreshing the bait every 15 days or so. Doesnt like real cold temps though, after -5c its pretty much useless.

Did you try the downloadable update? Its supposed to help. My Cabela's (Moultrie I50) outfitter camera works great.
But placement is an issue. Now that the leaves have fallen all is OK with daytime pics. Battery life is simply amazing
...must have 1500 pics on 1st set of batteries(6D cell) and still at 60% power.

For the $230...I don't think you could buy a better cam than Moultrie.:)
 
If you ck out the link I posted earlier, you will see there is a huge difference with the newer 2008 models and the earlier ones. The earlier ones get Great reviews. Seems it is the 2008 model for both the I40 and I 60 that has problems. They did not review the I50.

The updates I believe was for white out rather then the sensor not detecting its daytime.

I think mine is up to date, but I am going to ck. the website and see for sure. I did not want to to update until after hunting season just in case the update messes up the camera, which I have read has happened to a few people.
 
I bought 2 of the cheapest moultrie bass pro had ,believe it was $89 on sale.It takes a rechargeable 6 volt battery.Ive been happy with them although a bear had a go at one of them and its not in the best of shape anymore.I wich I would have bought a couple more-battery life is good,night piks are good to 15yards,haven't had any issues with the flash spooking game as i get several piks of the animal at a time.
 
I have 2 Moultrie cams.Love them.I also have a new Remington one.HATE it.Infared barely works,eats up battery's like there's no tomorrow.Wal-Mart won't take it back.Remington won't return my calls or emails.
 
I have the Moultrie I-50. LOVE this camera, had it up for 2 weeks now with 300 pics taken and still at 94% battery left. Pics are very clean night or day.
