Elcan scope

I'm a has-been of an earlier era...

Been out since 95ish. If you were jumping before that, we likely know the same lot of miscreants.

So you must have met the ''action figure man in person then :p

I couldn't resist, now I'm in a sarcastic mood..

Actually never met him. Never sober anyway. Or maybe its the other way around?

\s**t

When I first heard of his name I figured him maybe a long lost relative of B. "The 'stashe" Bolan. Then I found out the full spelling with a "d". Guess I won't be making nickel badge amateur detective after all.

All around good guy, and hey, got his own action figure, so....

By all guesstimates I think we might know one or two of the same people at any rate. So long as the brain cells don't continue to atrophy at the current, alarming rate.

Don't want to talk sheit, but I just won a tactical match with my 20 inch HBAR and Elcan (factory refurb) against a lot more expensive scopes and guns, including ACOGs, tactical scopes of all kinds and guys who hand load ammo for their ARs. I used 55 grain salvaged component US NATO ball ammo. I have made some amazing shots out to 700 yds (you wouldn't believe me if I related the story) with it and in all due respect, even though I am not using it in SHTF situations, I believe one of the reasons I won the match (and have done well in others) is the Elcan and the field of view it has - and we were shooting out to almost 300 yards and I made hits from that distance. I have had a 4X12X40 and a 10X40 Mildot B+L scope on it and sure, got more up close and better view, but for moving around and shooting quick and seeing the next target in the scope while moving over to it from your current one, I will stick with my Elcan :) and if you get one with the new mounts as mine and not a junk bubba rebuild using stuff chucked in the garbage you should do fine.

Congratulations on winning your match:runaway: But, with all due respect this sight may be fine for competition shooting and the like but it drops WAAAY short when being used for it's intended purposes. I agree, the field of view is fantastic and the glass is crystal clear but it lacks the durability and modern features required by the armed professional.

I think if you read back everyone who likes the scope only likes it for Service Rifle competition. It is a good choice for that.I don't think there is anyone here that likes it for combat or otherwise dangerous situations but then again maybe some of you guys that have used the new A2 overseas can comment.

The latest Gen III mounts are as bad as the Gen 1 mounts. It is just a bad idea to place the elevation and deflection adjusting mechanism on the out side of a scope. It will never retain a zero regardless of how many screws, springs and plastic doo dads you put on it.

Personally do not like it. Have seen too many broken on range, or falling off since they have the tendance to loosen. Troops are not taught to shoot properly with it. Used it for service rifle, works ok but in the sandbox, no way.
Be using iron, no fog, no zero variation etc, etc. Better stuff out there!

Gen4 is on the C79A2 -- same craptastic issue.

Rumors from afar that ELCAN may have fixed the Spectre's issues - this could transmit to a C79A3 that may not lose zero at a grad parade. However I am not holding my breath about either.

Careful Steph - I may post a pic of you with a C7A2 and C79A2 ;)

What is the story on Spectre- they are asking for over 1800 bucks for a copy now.

Who only knows...

There are several claims that they rebuilt the mount and the shift mechanism out of a better material less subject to wear and deviations from that.

If the zero sift is removed, or at least mitigated to a small portion (1MOA ish) and repeatable (no wandering shift) - then it quickly becomes a much more viable setup.

95% of the times I used my SHort Dot it was set for 1.1x with the red dot cranked on, the remaining times I would set it at 4x and look with the dot off. If Elcan can provide that sight in a reliable repeatable package good on them.
FYI LAV had a new one on his Colt/Daniel Defense gun - he had only gotten it recently - and was still not sold, but he wanted to try it.

Undergiver -- while you may like the sight for you.
Given the cost of ammo, fuel to the range and everything else these days, why take the chance you wasting resources with a 'lesser' optic. For me going to the range is about $100 in gas, add in ammo which even with reloads can be pricey these days, do I want a mount that will make my zero wander? Do I want to take the chance of the sight failing plinking or worse at a match? Granted its not your life that will be sacrificed if it goes down, but a lot of your hard work, and to save a relatvely small amount of money.

I plan of getting an Eotech 512 next year. Hopefully when the dollar is close to the U.S. again. So for now I have to go with the Tasco.

Fair enough -- although as both a Aimpoint Pro Rep, and a guy who knows its a much better sight, I would urge you to go with an Aimpoint product...

I would buy an aimpoint but the dots are too big for shooting at 100 metres and beyond at least for me. They take up too much of the target. The Eotech at least is half the size of the aimpoint dot and 100 yard shots at least for me are achieveable with a decent amount of accuracy. If I were to buy a 9mm subgun though a Aimpoint would be the first optic I would put on it.

aim for the top of the dot - turn down your rheostat to make the dot more precise.

Granted its not going to be as precise as a magnified optic with a defined aiming mark -- it is fine for tgts out to 250m.
