my buddy recently asked me a question about dewat pistols and for once i was stumped. now, i must warn you it does eem like a simple enough question but i just have no i dea.

his question was ' do i need a rpal licence to own a dewat pistol (#### and click)?'

again as i said, it is a simpl enough question but i just don't know. any help is great. thanks guys and gals.

ummmm no i dont think so cus its not a firearm any more.

they are hard got get over the boarder tho.

i could be wrong

Just a question on the topic. Will they de-register newly neutered #### and clicks or does the gun have to be welded solid.

he wanted one of those basque pistols that delselins is selling. and before someone says it, no he is not going to do anything illeagal with it. he just wants it cause he thinks it looks cool. i tried and tried and tried to get him to get his fire arms licence but to no avail.

I wouldn't help him anymore. Those wishing to own DEWATs are not helping the firearms community. He's no better than those who don't own any firearms. Lay it out, get your PAL or find your own DEWAT...

I agree. I have a few 'friends' who are firearms 'experts' who know everything about firearms because of what they've read on the 'net, books or magazines but don't shoot or own any firearms. They're 'know it all' types who can tell you the specs and 'effective range' of any firearm or calibre. One insists that outside that 'effective range' the bullet can't hurt anyone or cause any damage. I've run out of time and patience for them. They're just way too 'smart' and 'knowledgable' to listen to someone who owns firearms and shoots every weekend.

Ask him if he'd like to come stand outside of effective range and catch your bullets so you can re-use them. :sniper: See if he's still so confident when it's his life on the line.

If it's truly "deactivated" then it's not a "firearm" anymore and he doesn't need a license. Mind you, I don't know why a dewat firearm is ok, but a fake "replica" is a no-no... I'm not familiar with these "Basque" pistols mentioned. Are they in fact deactivated firearms, or kinda cheesy looking antique-ish fake decoration thingys made in Spain? Kinda on the same level of decorative medieval armour?

I was under the impression DEWAT meant deactivated war trophy. It's what they give some of the old timers who retire from police/military services after many years or the ones who are forced to retire from occupation related injuries, etc. I've only seen one, a Glock 19 in a 3D box, it belongs to a friend of mine who retired from the NYPD.

I didn't know you could buy them as civillians and especially without a PAL.

Can anyone fill me in because I'm curious to know the laws about this?

Tim.

Well yes, "DEWAT" probably does stand for "Deactivated War Trophy", but alot of guys use it as short-hand for a firearm converted to permanent non-firing capability. (Whether brought back from a war or more likely, not.) The CFC website has some 'guidelines' about what it takes to deactivate a firearm in Canada. There's even a form you can fill out and fax to them to tell them you've deactivated a firearm and that it should be removed from registration. But unless the firearm is in a class you can't own with a PAL (Like a full-auto, or listed Prohib, etc.) it's really not worth it to deactivate something. Unless I suppose it's kinda old & junky and not worth shooting. I've seen some pretty neat/hideous looking lamps made of old Martini-Henry's and French Ordnance revolvers.

But they're not something typically one sees outside of the sport-shooting community anyhow anymore.
