I haven't tried it but it should not be a problem turning it off. Katana, remember the gun is gas operated and not recoil operated like a handgun. The spring is not absorbing any backwards pressure from the cartridge firing but is there to cycle the action that is started from the gas. The bolt doesn't start moving right away like it does in say a semi auto rim fire. The bolt PULLS the cartridge out, it doesn't get pushed by it.
That being said, there could be more resistance opening the bolt after firing with the gas off. I would think more so with the steel cased lacquered ammo that might not spring back in size as much as a brass case would especially after it cools for a second or two before you extract it manually.
It would be fun to try at the range. Try 20 rounds both ways, switching back and forth every 5 rounds.
