Hello Everyone,

After spending a lot of time and effort and after reviewing the current offerings in the 7.62 x 51 semi-auto black rifle market in Canada and after a lot of consideration of the import and export issues, I have decided to investigate manufacturing this type of rifle in Canada.

I am looking for input from the gun ownership community in Canada for features and options that they would desire for such a firearm. I am also trying to gauge domestic Canadian demand.

Now before everyone calls bullsh_t on this I just want you to know that my group owns three manufacturing plants in North America, with one in Canada that has all the tools and manufacturing equipment to build anything from cad/cam design.

Initial thoughts: FN-FAL gas system, AR-10 bolt, AR-180 style bolt carrier and recoil spring, G36 style changeable barrel, FN-FAL para style stock, 1913 rail system full on top and on front handguard, empty mag boly hold open, Timney drop in trigger system, and finally flip up front and rear battle sights. I am even considering exchangable barrels and mag wells for calibre changes. Initial barrel 18.5" rock river polygonal rifled barrel. Rifle would be manufactured from 4140 steel.

This will take some time to make happen and there are no guarantees but I am tired of gas impingement systems and the hassles of US/Europe import export. Its about time someone built a rifle like this in Canada.

Please let me know your thoughts. I am looking for indications of demand, price points and desired features.

Severus

A Canadian made 7.62x51 semi sounds great. Your specs sound great too (I'm not completely familiar with all the components you listed, but from what I know, sounds great). My suggestions - adjustable gas system a must (not sure if your system has one), and watch cost as well. That's THE big one. I'd love to buy a rifle (or two) like you're suggesting, but then I also swooned over genuine Springfield Armory M14's for decades and never bought one because of the cost. You've got to get it on the market at a price that a "normal" guys can afford.

Your rifle specs sound good to me. And I would love to support a Canadian gun industry. Lastly, I think that Northman999 is right on the money when he says that a "normal" guy has to be able to afford it.

Just for the record, the specs you mentioned but in .223 would definitely have me wanting one ;)

Instead of designing a totally new system why not just build a high quality AR-15 style rifle in both 5.56/.223 and .308? I know that this will automatically be restricted but you can capture a big chunk of the AR-15 market in Canada.

An established & debugged design should be easier to sell than a new one. Once established you can come up with a non-restricted gun of your on design too.

From what it sounds like I think you would have a customer in me! I guess one of my requirements would have to be the cost, and the classification of it.
I dont think you should worry about the ability to sell them, as I can guarantee that they will all be sold rather quickly.
I think that it will shoot like a charm. I guess another question would be about the feed system would you use a AR-10 style mag or a stoner? If AR-10 is it gonna be DPMS or Actual Ar-10?

Were you thinking it would be around 1800-2000? or more around the lines of 3k?

Very limited market since you will not be able to sell it in the US.

Your best bet may be to make an original-style AR10 since it is not a variant of the AR15.

People who can pay $1500+ plus already have bushmasters.

I'd be willing to make serious allowances for finish if you could keep it under $600 and of course I'd not mind one bit if many of the parts were manufactured elsewhere, as long as it was assembled and serviced here.

I'd want all the originality to be concentrated on production efficiency instead of any whiz-bang gizmos.

I'm joe six-pack, and I want a rifle that directly competes with the norc m-14 and cz 858 rather than a competitor with swiss arms. An AR-10 clone sounds lovely, if non-res.

I'm also ok with the use of zinc-aluminum alloys, and/or polymer in major parts groups. Whatever cost savings are required to get me, joe-sixpack, an honest-to-god black rifle, at a price I can actually pay, you do. We're the reason that all the cz-858's with non restricted barrels flew off the shelves after all, even though it looks a little "off", and that stock is nothing less than hideous.

wait just a tic, Does that mean the Original AR-10 is a non-res?

An original AR10 would be Prohibited... IIRC, the AR10 was semi & full auto...

BUT... Much like the M305, an M14 copy... The M305 was NEVER a select fire rifle and NOT prohib...

Same logic applies to the AR10, a newly manufactured one, that was NEVER select fire, would be good to go!

FA AFAIK: Full Auto as far as he knows

It's true though, a semi-only AR-10 in orignal config can't be classed as an AR15 derivitive as it was conceived BEFORE the AR15.

There were a handful of AR-10s made as original semi auto. Apparently one is in Canada. Theoretically, a reproduction of an original AR-10 should not be restricted, because it is not a variant of the AR-15.
The developmental curve for an original design is long and steep. It would be easier to produce an established design. To make a non-restricted .308 semi auto that would sell in the same price range as a Remington 7400 series would be a real challenge.
The AR-180B was mentionned. There was an AR-18 predecessor in 7.62x51 - the AR-16.
Don't know what market you are targetting, or how many units you anticipate selling annually. Scratch building a sophisticated rifle, in limited numbers, to sell at an attractive price, in a limited market, isn't going to happen.
