I would say that a test run of say 500-1000 would be good for the Canadian Side. For the American side I would say pump out as many as possible, people are Buying up guns as fast as they can down there.

I also agree that those in the "know" of product production knows Canada's Quality is top notch bar none.

Its good to hear that they will NOT be AR style, but indeed a new style, What are you thinking it will look like Severus?
Also what is it that your factories currently produce? Will it be difficult to get through the red tape of firearm manufacture?
 
Look at FN SCAR and Magpul. Aluminum extrusion tube with continous rail. Steel rails riveted to the inside of the reciever with G36 style bolt carrier.

Gas system - look at HK417, SCAR H and AR18.

Fixed length folding stock is so 70's - put on an AR extension tube so people can use Magpul CTR!

I am not re-inventing the wheel. All that is required is blending the best of many different designs and adding some of my own ideas. The process is receiver centric as most of the other parts are already available on a third party production basis. CNC and CAD design brings development and manufacturing down.

The barrels I am talking about are hammer forged, nitride treated (not chrome lined crap) and fluted, just like snipers use. Gas system is adjustable.

There is no consideration of an AR style rifle. That one has been beaten to death and while a decent firearm, its time has come and gone.

An LWRC .308 in Canada is very unlikely. DOS in the US will soon require a DSP-83 (End Use Certificate) for any military calibre imported into Canada if allowed at all.

Lastly, the end result should be non-restricted. As for US production, we own two US factories that could produce it as well.

I am even considering exchangable barrels and mag wells for calibre changes. Initial barrel 18.5" rock river polygonal rifled barrel. Rifle would be manufactured from 4140 steel.

This will take some time to make happen and there are no guarantees but I am tired of gas impingement systems and the hassles of US/Europe import export. Its about time someone built a rifle like this in Canada.

Please let me know your thoughts. I am looking for indications of demand, price points and desired features.

I am interested!
Lower cost is better than high end for me at least. ($1200
or less would be good.)
I would also be interested in .223 but .308 is great too.

Seriously--if you step up and do this right, I will try to support
you with a purchase. These import restrictions are getting old in a hurry.
 
Well I suppose we are all entitled to an opinion here but if this looks anything like the FN FAL para then sign me up.

That being said, the specs sound good except for that FN Fal para stock. That stock looks like crap.

Also a side charging handle would be nice. One on the left side for a change not the right. Or something that can be switched to either side. The charging handle on the AR isn't bad except it's awkward with a scope.

It'll be interesting to see if anything comes from this.

Also, you better setup the infrastructure to deal with return and warranty work. I guarantee the first 100 rifles would be riddled with problems. No one has ever got the first batch right.
 
This is great input.

Fixed folders may be 70's but they work. Adjustability will be considered and the possibility for extension tube option will be added to list of "nice to haves"

7.62x39mm will be option for barrel and mag well change out. 7.62x33mm is my idea and meant to provide lighter weight but still heavy firepower depending on powder/ballistics set up.

This will NOT be a plastic or aluminum rifle.

Side charging handle with convertability to either side and ambidextrous safety and bolt carrier release. Also oversize trigger guard for winter ops.

Predictions by more than one importer is that this ammunition is being consumed very fast - might not be alot of surplus in the next decade like we see now. Most likely 308/223 probably the best bet for long term viability for Severus's product.

Severus, if your product is non-restricted I would buy. I think something that is restricted would have significantly less market appeal.

What fun! It seems that you want to use some "off the rack" ideas mated with the stuff people want.

You have to keep the rifle customizable. People want to tinker with their rifles. Using off the shelf AR but stock mating system, and even perhaps AR style hand guard system would insure this.


Some considerations:
Ambi charging handle...almost a must nowadays.
Ambi mag catch. Push button is faster..the Ar style is the best IMO. Paddle would do.
Ar Style grip interface...no need to reinvent this either...so many options out there it would be silly to consider designing your own.

It should use existing mags. AR, AK, FAL, M14...whatever.

It's great you are asking for input. Knowing your customer is half the battle.
 
I'd buy one. Stay away from the Para stock though. Not gonna be jumping out of any planes with my rifles any time soon and the grip angle on the FALs is UGLY.

Just make sure your design is original enough that the geniuses at the RCMP don't label it restricted or prohibited.

Remember that FRT's are only a Reference and are not the most reliable in terms of data and are subjet to error
 
whatever you do.. make sure you dress up the model you send to the rcmp for review as a hunting gun with a real fugly wood stock/handguards and absolutely nothing tacticool on it.

perhaps make it superfugly and have some engraving of animals or a hunting scene done to it aswell, like on those sxs or o/u shotguns.
