for this time of year (southern ontario, cold, snow, cold) what makes for a good deer bait? I usually use corn, but in the area/farm I am hunting corn is still standing so I thought I try something a little different.....

corn is ok but its not food it will do nothing for their health it will fill them up but it does not contain anything nutrishious for them. A Wheat, Barley and corn mix would be good with molasis the corn and sugar from the molasis will give them energy quick and the wheat and barley will give them what they actually need.

I know you only want bait but you have to think in the best interest of the deer if they frequent your bait and you only have corn they may not be getting what they need and it could put them in a ####ty position in the cold weather.

I hate to tell someone they're wrong.....but your wrong.
Corn is a great source of starch which is quickly transformed into energy, thereby quickly adding fat.
Good supply of protein also. In fact, a large percentage of all beef animals are finished on corn. :D
Deer are focusing their attention on food sources right now. Apples are hard to beat as an attractant. I'll have to try the carrot thing though.:)

ummmn nope some one needs to go back to gr8 science....lol...

quickly adding fat? fat takes along time to build up

starch is a simple sugar that is burned quickly by the body it does not get stored. Grains and grass are complex carbs they can be stored for along time in the muscles of deer and also get stored as fat......I'm not saying a deer eating only corn wont get fat cause it will if its not very active but it wont be a healthy deer thats for sure......you eat pure sugar and see how long you last......

Corn also has next to 0 protien protien is stored in complex carbs like grains, meats and nuts

Apples are great till frost hits them then they turn to moosh and deer dont eat them

Get a Beef feed or deer feed ask your local co-op mine has a deer feed thats a mixed grain with some corn thats basted in molasis its like $10 for 55lbs......or carrots like mentioned already.

corn may fatten cattle but the meat tastes better when fattened on barley so I think deer meet would also taste better on barley.

Second,or third cut alfalfa-timothy-clover mix makes great deer feed. You should be able to buy it off the farmers in southern Ont.Just put an add in the paper down there lookin for deer hay,and you should get an answer.

Actually corn has a crude protein level of around 9% vs 13% for barley. Deer are not utilizing the corn as a solitary food source and are merely supplementing their overall diet. I would rather supply them with something that will improve body conditioning ie. fat.

"Compared to other feed grains, corn is lower in protein and slightly higher in energy (Table 1). Corn contains approximately 70% starch on a dry matter basis. Other important fractions in the corn kernel include protein, fiber, and minerals."

The rations your buy at the store are of little use in the field, as they must be kept dry. They usually contain (per ton) 350kg R corn, 350hg R.barley, 225kg 40% protein pellet, and 75kg mol. That gives you an 18% protein ration.
Find an apple tree that is slowly losing its apples in Dec due to the weight of snow, and I guarantee you will find deer. :D

actually some feed corn only has a protien level of 5%up to 9% which is very low when compaired to the 18% offered in a decent beef feed.

but we can go all day here in the end use what you want for bait but be carefull the deer may become dependant on teh feed if its the only abundant food source around.

If corn does or does not have the most protein isn't really the point, if it has more energy/protein that is otherwise available(ie. browse) it is an improvement.

Some people prefer whole cracked corn over whole corn, it is easier for the deer to digest so they say.

From my experience apple's are # 1 if you want them to get them in a routine quick . I'v also used

cracked corn
whole kernal corn
carrots
beet pulp
pumpkin

Seem's to work in that order around here . Molases work's great great too .
