Cash for Tags ??? wtf

Selling licences is a service, not a money maker and by taking credit cards for them....retailers have to pay a certain percentage to the credit card company thus reducing the already small amount they make or it could even end up costing them money. Most retailers sell them with the hopes it brings in customers and they eat the credit card costs but I guess this shop figured it wasn't worth it any more.

Sheephunter's right, that merchant probably didn't even want to pay the small interac transaction and deposit fees. The other issue is he may have a problem with keeping the license money separate or had a shortgage he had to reimburse to the govt himself. Merchants actually lose money evertime they sell a license.

They make pennies each time they sell one, they are forced to keep the funds separate from their regular account and are subject to audits all the time. They have to pay 15 cents for each debit transaction and then they are charged for the electronic deposit everytime the total off the debti machine. If it's visa or mastercard the charge is also between 1.5 and 5%
of the charged amount.

The merchant might have cost of a dollar or two to make 50 cents on one license.

Well TnT Gunworks in Regina can easily make that back with their 35% mark up on every thing in their shop vs. SIR or Wholesale. Ive seen many used rifles on their racks for the price of new ones in Wholesale. If they can't get with the times then they'll just loose business, maybe enough that a new shop will open that actually has fair market prices.

Last time I bought a hunting license at SIR they would not take a credit card either.

While in Yellowknife recently, I tried to buy a small game licence in a store that "used to sell them"... Several people had said "go buy it there", so I tried... The owner said that he had stopped selling licences because it was more bother than anything else. The time he had to put into getting, selling and filling them out, and reporting back to the territorial govnt, was just a headache. Compounded by the very low $$$ paid to the retailer for actually selling them, he believed that selling licences actuall COST him $$$!!! And, if all those details are true, then I understand why they want to have cash, every percentage counts when your trying to make a living.

Long and short of it was that I had to wait till "regular" business hours and get it at the Natural Resources office.

Cheers
Jay
